EDINBORO, Pa. — The Pitt-Johnstown women's volleyball team came up a few plays short of flipping the outcome of a 3-0 setback (20-25, 23-25, 17-25) at Edinboro on Saturday evening at McComb Fieldhouse.
The Mountain Cats slipped to 9-7 (3-4 PSAC) on the season. Edinboro improved to 10-9 (3-4 PSAC).
Caroline Knight led the offensive attack with a match-high 14 kills to pair with 12 digs and three blocks. Ellie Zuro Cirino provided eight kills and four digs, while Kamila Velez Rodriguez chipped in five kills.
Pitt-Johnstown erased a 10-6 deficit in the opening set with a 6-1 run, capped by a Kiara Harmon ace, to take its first lead of the match. The Mountain Cats later closed to within one at 21-20 following a kill from Knight and an Edinboro attack error, but it was close as they would get to tying it.
Neither team led by more than two throughout the second set until the Scots ran off three straight points to close the frame. The Mountain Cats led briefly at 21-20 and were trailing 22-21 before a key kill from Knight and an attack error put them up 23-22. A service ace and a kill from the Scots gave them a 2-0 advantage.
Ellie Zuro Cirino recorded a kill to open up the third set, but it was the only time the Mountain Cats held a lead. Knight and Zuro Cirino each contributed four kills in the third set.
Abigail Berry dished out a team-high 16 assists, and Arielis Valle Villegas added 14 assists. Avery Koontz provided a team-high 13 digs.
