Frostburg State (MD) took advantage of a pair of runs in the top of the first and went on to hold off the Pitt-Johnstown softball team, 3-2, in the Mountain Cats' third game of their opening day at the triangle Classic in Raleigh, NC.

Avery Smiach, followed by two base hits put Frostburg State in front, 2-0,

Smiach settled down and retired 11 of the next 14 batters she faced to allow the Mountain Cats to get back in it.

After a lead-off double and an error in the top of the third increased the Bobcats' advantage to 3-0, Pitt-Johnstown answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Brynnae Coe to start the inning, McDonough reached on a fielder's choice and Smiach drew a walk to put runners on first and second.Â
Mia Smith then delivered a one-out, two-run single to cut the Mountain Cat deficit to 3-2, but Pitt-Johnstown wasn't able to push across the tying run and suffered it first loss of the season.Â

The Mountain Cats will wrap the Triangle Classic with games against Fayetteville State (NC) and Ferrum (VA) on Sunday.
