West Virginia Wesleyan Slips Past Mountain Cats, 10-9, in Virginia

Smith, MiaLupfer, TaylorMia Smith had two hits and drove in a pair and Taylor Lupfer and Meghan McDonough added three hits and an RBI each in a 16-hit Pitt-Johnstown attack, but West Virginia Wesleyan used a five-run fifth inning to erase a one run deficit and hold off the Mountain Cats, 10-9, Sunday morning in Salem, Va.
 
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, before the Mountain Cats, now 5-5, answered with three in the bottom of the frame to tie it.  McDonough singled to lead off and Mylee Gdula reached on a field's choice ahead of Mia Smith's two-run double.  Lupfer then singled home Smith to knot it.
 
Sydney Lowen's two-run single in the top of the third gave the lead back to West Virginia Wesleyan, but the Mountain Cats answered again with three more runs in their next at-bat.  Back-to-back base hits from Smith and Lupfer, followed by an Avery Smiach RBI single cut it to 5-4.  The Mountain Cats then got run scoring singles from Kaylee Smolko and Annabelle Helt to take their first lead of the day.
 
However, the Bobcats struck for five runs in the fifth, highlighted by two-runs singles from Madison Austra and Lynzee Hague, to build a 10-6 advantage.
 
McDonough, MeghanPitt-Johnstown continued to battle picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth when Lupfer scored on Audrey Paterson's base hit, and two more in the seventh, including a bases loaded walk to Gdula, to make it 10-9, but Morgan Greene was able to get the final out to preserve the win for the Bobcats.
 
Along with Smith, Lupfer, and McDonough, Helt and Smolko had two hits and an RBI, while Gdula, Smaich, and Paterson all and hits and drove in one for the Mountain Cats.
 
Smicach suffered the loss after allowing all 10 runs on 11 hits over the first 4.2 innings.  Mahlon Yonkin pitched the final 2.1 innings and held West Virginia Wesleyan without a hit.
 
The Bobcats are now 6-11 on the season.
