JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown was swept in a PSAC West doubleheader by West Division frontrunner Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 in eight innings in the opener and 9-3 in game two.
The Mountain Cats slipped to 12-19 (6-12 PSAC).
Game 1: Slippery Rock 3, Pitt-Johnstown 2
Pitt-Johnstown bounced back to even the game twice to force extra innings.
The Rock scored a run on two hits in the eighth, and the Mountain Cats went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end it.
Mia Smith took the complete-game loss, allowing seven hits and striking out four with no walks.
Slippery Rock struck first with a run in the first before the Mountain Cats answered in the third. With two outs, Meghan McDonough tripled to deep right field and scored on a throwing error to knot it at 1-all.
After the Rock scored to take the lead in the sixth, McDonough led off the bottom half with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Isabella DePalma then cracked an RBI single to make it 2-2.
McDonough and Audrey Paterson each had two hits for the Mountain Cats, who tallied five compared to Slippery Rock's seven.
Rachel Baker earned the win in the circle for the Rock.
Game 2: Slippery Rock 9, Pitt-Johnstown 3
Pitt-Johnstown never forged ahead after Slippery Rock scored four runs on three hits and an error in the second to go up 4-0.
The Rock went ahead 5-0 in the fourth before the Mountain Cats trimmed that deficit in the fifth.
Audrey Paterson crushed a solo home run to lead off to make it 5-1. One batter later, freshman Keira Link legged out an infield single, stole second and moved to third on error and scored on Emma DiStefano's RBI infield single.
Kylie Mettrick followed with an RBI triple to cut it to 5-3.
Slippery Rock added four runs on four hits in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Mahlon Yonkin suffered the complete-game loss after giving up all nine runs, just five earned, on 11 hits.
Paige Gresgott earned the complete-game win for Slippery Rock, which moved to 22-10 (16-2 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will visit Clarion on Saturday for another PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
