BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown strung together a five-run fourth inning to secure a 7-2 win over Bloomsburg in the opener before suffering a 6-3 defeat in the second game to close out a non-conference twinbill on Tuesday afternoon at Jan Hutchinson Field.
The Mountain Cats sit at 13-22 overall (6-14 PSAC).
Game 1: Pitt-Johnstown 7, Bloomsburg 2
Kylie Mettrick and Isabella DePalma both doubled, had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Mountain Cats, who pounded out 10 hits. Keira Link went 2-for-3, scored two runs and added an RBI.
Mia Smith provided two hits, including an RBI double in the second that scored Audrey Paterson and tied it at 1-1. She also earned the complete-game win in the circle after allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits to go along with seven strikeouts and five walks.
Link singled to lead off the third, stole second and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Mettrick to put the Mountain Cats in front for good.
Pitt-Johnstown pulled away in the fourth, capitalizing on four hits and an error to score five runs, all coming with two outs, for a 7-1 advantage. Link started the rally with an RBI single to score Mylee Gdula, who walked earlier in the inning.
After Meghan McDonough reached on an error to allow Kaylee Smolko to cross home, Mettrick doubled home Link and DePalma followed with a 2-RBI double to cap the outburst.
Josie Straigis took the loss for the Huskies.
Game 2: Bloomsburg 6, Pitt-Johnstown 3
The Mountain Cats held a 3-0 advantage, but were undone when the Huskies scored six runs on four hits in the fourth.
Jessica Pugh powered the offense by going 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI double. Her one-out blast in the second made it 1-0. Link walked, stole second and scored on McDonough's RBI single to right.
Gianna Surra reached on an error with one out and scored on Pugh's double to the gap in right-center.
Mahlon Yonkin suffered the loss in the circle after throwing 3.2 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits. Avery Smiach tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Becca Varhula picked up the win in the circle for the Huskies, who are now 22-16 (12-12 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will visit Edinboro for a PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday.
