SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown suffered a 6-3 loss in the opener before being shut down in a 5-0 setback in the second game to conclude a PSAC West doubleheader with Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon at Kasnevich Field.
The Mountain Cats fell to 8-13 (2-8 PSAC).
Game 1: Slippery Rock 6, Pitt-Johnstown 3
The Mountain Cats struck first, but were limited to just three hits in a game that they led through the first three innings.
Meghan McDonough was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on an error and crossed home on an Isabella DePalma sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 in the first.
DePalma walked with one out to start the fourth before Jessica Pugh singled to put two on. Pinch-runners Kylie Mettrick and Keira Link each stole a base in the inning before both came around to score when Taylor Lupfer laced a 2-RBI double to extend it to 3-0.
The Rock responded by stringing together seven hits in a six-run bottom half of the inning that gave them the lead for good.
Mia Smith was handed the loss after scattering eight hits, three strikeouts and two walks over six innings. Rachel Baker earned the complete game win for Slippery Rock.
Audrey Paterson represented the sixth and final base runner of the game when she singled with two outs in the seventh, but was left stranded.
Game 2: Slippery Rock 5, Pitt-Johnstown 0
Pitt-Johnstown was limited to just one hit against Slippery Rock's Paige Gresgott, who tossed a complete game shutout with five strikeouts compared to four walks.
Mahlon Yonkin took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on 11 hits over all six innings.
The best chance the Mountain Cats had to score came right away when McDonough slapped a base-hit into right center to lead off the first. She stole second before DePalma was hit by a pitch to put two on, but back-to-back pop outs ended the threat.
Slippery Rock scored three runs on four hits in the third to take a lead that never faded away. The Rock tacked on a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to set the final.
McDonough, Mettrick, DePalma and Annabelle Helt all drew walks for the Mountain Cats.
Maddie Cavenaugh went 3-for-4 for Slippery Rock, which improved to 14-10 (8-2 PSAC).
The Mountain Cats will host Clarion in a PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday at the Pitt-Johnstown Softball Field.
