No 8 Wrestlers Fall at Home to No. 12 Kutztown, 19-13

Gary Lantz won by major decision at 174 lbs. to give the eighth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers a three-point lead, but 12th-ranked Kutztown University closed the match with three consecutive wins to snap Pitt-Johnstown's 16-match unbeaten streak with a 19-13 victory, Friday night in the Sports Center.  The Mountain Cats slipped to 2-1 and 0-1 in the PSAC.
           
Seventh-ranked Dave Fogle got Pitt-Johnstown started with a solid 3-0 win over Tom Traxler at 125 lbs., but Kutztown bounced back with two straight wins of their own.
 
The Golden Bears got a 15-2 major decision from sixth-ranked Evan Yenolevich over Evan Link at 133 lbs., and Mitch Voelker defeated Luke Palamides 4-3 at 141 lbs. to put Kutztown in front 7-3.
 
The Mountain Cats answered right back with a pair of wins of the own.  At 149 lbs., sixth-ranked Dave Cawley scored a 7-2 victory over Joe Esposito, and Sam Molina used a third-period stalling point to break a 4-4 tie and defeat Matt Martoccio, 5-4 at 157 lbs.
 
It continued to see-saw back and forth.  Kutztown regained the lead with Justin Heller's narrow 6-5 win over John Blankenship at 165 lbs., but Lantz, a two-time National Qualifier, picked-up four team points for the Mountain Cats and gave Pitt-Johnstown a 13-10 advantage with a 9-1 major decision over Bo Candelaria at 174 lbs.
 
The Golden Bears evened the score when Giovanni Ortiz built a 9-1 lead after one period and held of Nikos Garafola, 11-9, in the 184-lb. bout.
 
It came down to the final two matches.  However, Kutztown got an 8-3 win by Brandon Clark over Zak Newton at 197 lbs., forcing eighth-ranked Josh Duplin to pull off an upset of NCAA No.- 1-ranked Ziad Haddad at 285 lbs.  It wasn't to be, as Ziad defeated Duplin, 9-3, securing the 19-13 Golden Bears' victory.
 
Kutztown improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday and to the 2013 PSAC Championships at Edinboro University on Dec. 7.  The Mountain Cats will not return to the Sports Center until Jan. 25 when they host Millersville University at 7 p.m.
