Vescovi Leads Mountain Cats Over Kutztown, 86-75

Ian Vescovi scored 25 points to set a career-high for the second straight game, and the Mountain Cats gave Head Coach Bob Rukavina his 399th career victory by defeating Kutztown University, 86-75, Wednesday night in the Sports Center.  Pitt-Johnstown improved to 7-3 on the year.
 
In addition, Bill Luther scored 13 points to move to within 12 of becoming Pitt-Johnstown's 25th 1,000-point scorer.
 
It was all Mountain Cats from the opening tip.  Nate Snodgrass' 3-pointer five minutes gave Pitt-Johnstown a quick 10-point advantage, before Jake Laravie's 3-pointer pushed it out to 23 at 33-10 six minutes later.
 
Kutztown tried to get back into it with a 16-7 run, capped by a Tracy Peal bucket, to cut the deficit to 40-26, but Andrew Cressler answered for the Mountain Cats with a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired to extend it to 45-28 at the half.
 
The Golden Bears wouldn't go away.  Kutztown came out in the second half and outscored the Mountain Cats 21-4 over the first five minutes to tie it at 49 on a Josh Johnson dunk.
 
Ian Vescovi scored six points to help Pitt-Johnstown rebuild the lead to 59-51 at the 12-minure mark, and the Mountain Cats would never let the Golden Bears get closer than three the rest of the way.
 
Pitt-Johnstown extended the lead back to 13 on five occasions, before going on to the 11-point victory.
 
Luther, who needs just 12 points to become Pitt-Johnstown's 25th 1,000-point scorer, also ranks third on the Mountain Cat All-Time 3-point Field Goals List with 210.
 
Along with Vescovi's 25 points and six rebounds, Snodgrass netted 16 points, and Luther finished with 13 points.  Laravie and Paul Weatherly each scored eight points, and Matt Palo tallied seven points and six rebounds for the Mountain Cats.
 
Pitt-Johnstown wrapped-up the night shooting 52.4% (33-63) from the field, 6-17 from 3-point range, and 14-19 from the charity stripe.  Kutztown shot 46.6% (27-58) from the floor, 4-8 from behind the 3-point line, and 17-26 from the free-throw line.
 
Peal led the way for the Golden Bears with 24 points and eight rebounds.  Johnson had 15 points, six rebounds, and four blocks, and Austin Beidelman had 12 points for Kutztown, which fell to 3-5.
 
The Mountain Cats close out the first semester at Mansfield University on Saturday.  Pitt-Johnstown will then open the second semester with road games at Lock Haven and Bloomsburg on January 3 and 4, before hosting a doubleheader with the Lady Cats against East Stroudsburg on January 8.
