Rukavina, Luther Reach Milestones in Win at Mansfield

Bill Luther scored 22 points to become Pitt-Johnstown's 25th 1,000-point scorer on his way to leading the Mountain Cats to a 91-74 victory at Mansfield University and giving Head Coach Bob Rukavina his 400th career win on Saturday.  The Mountain Cats improved to 8-3 on the season.
 
Luther, who needed 12 points to reach the milestone, led Pitt-Johnstown with 22 points.  Luther's 1,010 points are 13 points shy of Josue Nieves for 24th on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List.  Luther is also third on the Pitt-Johnstown Career-3-Point Filed Goals List with 216.
 
Rukavina, the all-time "winningest" coach in Pitt-Johnstown history, has led the Mountain Cats to four NCAA Division II Regional Tournament appearances in his 24-plus season at the school.  Rukavina has averaged nearly 17 victories per season since taking over the program prior to the 1989-90 season.
 
Matt Palo's jumper staked the Mountain Cats out to a 16-9 lead seven minutes into the game, but Mansfield kept it close and cut it to on Joe Bell's lay-up and free-throw with just under four minutes to play in the half.
 
However, Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Mounties 10-4 four the rest of the way, including Andrew Cressler's 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to put the Mountain Cats up 42-34 at the half.
 
A pair of Luther free-throws followed by another bucket from Cressler extended the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 46-34 to start the second half.
 
Mansfield came back and outscored the Mountain Cats 19-5 over the next six minutes to regain the lead 53-81 on a Charles Pemberton conventional 3-point play, but Pitt-Johnstown responded with a 19-2 run of its own to build a 15-point advantage.
 
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Luther put him over the 1,000-point mark, before a 3-pointer from Cressler pushed it out to 70-55 at the 8:51 mark.
 
The Mountain Cats built the lead to as many as 20 at 87-67 on an Ian Vescovi basket with three minutes left and coasted to the 17-point win.
 
Luther's 22 points, including six 3-pointers, paced three Mountain Cats who scored in double figures.   Cressler finished with 17 points, and Vescovi had 14 points and four rebounds.  Pitt-Johnstown also got nine points from Jake Laravie, seven points, six rebounds and a career-high 12 assists from Nate Snodgrass, and seven points and five rebounds from Palo.
 
The Mountain Cats shot an impressive 58.2% 32-55) from the floor, 11-18 from 3-point range, and 16-17 from the free-throw line.  Pitt-Johnstown held the Mountain to just 38.4% (28-73) shooting for the game, including just 3-21 from behind the 3-point line.  Mansfield was also 15-21 from the charity stripe.
 
Bell led Mansfield and all scorers with 34 points and seven rebounds.  Pemberton added 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Mounties, who dropped to 2-9 on the year.
 
The Mountain Cats will break for the holiday season before traveling to Lock Haven University on January 3 and Bloomsburg University on January 4.  The Mountain Cats  will then host a doubleheader with the Lady Cats against East Stroudsburg University on January 8 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
