Strong Second Half Leads Mountain Cats Over Clarion

Nate Snodgrass scored 18 points, and Pitt-Johnstown outscored Clarion University 39-19 over the final 16 minutes to erase an eight-point deficit in a 78-68 PSAC road victory over then Golden Eagles on Wednesday.  The Mountain Cats improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC Western Division.
 
After a tight start that saw five ties and four lead changes, Clarion used an 11-0 run to erase a two-point deficit and build a 23-14 lead on Aaron Johnson's 3-pointer at 7:19.
 
A 3-pointer by A.J. Leahey, followed by a Matt Palo lay-up, got the Mountain Cats to within two at 25-23, but the Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 33-26 on a jumper from Corey Bellovich with just over two minutes left in the half.
 
Bill Luther answered with 3-pointer at 1:05 that closed a quick 7-0 Pitt-Johnstown run to knot it at 33, but DeMarius Miller connected for a long-range three of his own with time running out to give Clarion a 36-33 halftime advantage.
 
The Golden Eagles extended it to 47-39 four minutes into the second half.
 
The Mountain Cats continued to battle.  Snodgrass drained a 3-pointer that got it down four, before Pitt-Johnstown regained the lead on its next possession on a bucket from Adam Shaheen at the 9:07 mark.
 
The Mountain Cats would never give up the lead again.  Ian Vescovi scored four straight points to make it a five-point advantage, and Palo added a basket to increase the lead to 67-60 with 3:10 to play.
 
Snodgrass then went on to hit eight straight free-throws down the stretch to help Pitt-Johnstown secure the 10-point victory.
 
Snodgrass finished with 18 points and six rebounds, while Vescovi chipped-in 14 points, five rebounds, and three blocks to lead the Mountain Cats.  Palo collected a double-double of 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while Luther and Shaheen each netted nine points.  Andrew Cressler also tallied seven points and seven rebounds in the win.
 
Luther, who needs 55 points to become Pitt-Johnstown's 25th 1,000-point scorer, also ranks third on the Mountain Cat All-Time 3-point Field Goals List with 205.
 
The Mountain Cats, who out-rebounded Clarion 48-31, shot a season-low 41.7% (25-60) from the floor.  Pitt-Johnstown also hit 8-20 from behind the 3-point line and 20-25 from the free-throw line.  Clarion was held to just 39.7% (25-63) shooting, 6-20 from 3-point range, and 12-18 from the charity stripe.
 
Miller scored a game-high 22 points, and Mike Kromka tallied 11 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC West.
 
The Mountain Cats host a PSAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Slippery Rock University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center, before hosting doubleheaders with the women's team against Shippensburg University on December 17 and Kutztown University 18 starting at 5:30 p.m.
