Mountain Cats Score 84-67 Win at Bloomsburg

Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.), Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.) and Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) all scored 15 points to help the Mountain Cats make it four straight wins and close out the first semester with an 84-67 victory at Bloomsburg University, Saturday afternoon. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 5-3.
Novak's lay-up gave Pitt-Johnstown an early 6-2 lead, before a pair of Ed Hall free-throws put Bloomsburg up 7-6 at the 13:17 mark.
The Mountain Cats answered and took control of the first half with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by Rudy Roberts' (Cleveland, OH) basket, to build a 21-9 lead.
Andy Byer's (Tire Hill, Pa.) three-pointer extended the advantage to 31-15 with 4:01 left in the half. However, the Huskies outscored Pitt-Johnstown 13-4 the rest of the way to cut the deficit to 35-28 at halftime.
The Mountain Cats came out and scored the first four points of the second half to go back up by 11 points. Bloomsburg cut it to 43-35 2:30 into the half, but Pitt-Johnstown went back up by 11 at 49-38 just over a minute later.
The Huskies battled back with a 10-2 run to cut it to 51-48 on Ruben Britt's steal and dunk at the 12:30 mark.
However, it never got any closer. Jordan Miller's (Mineral Point, Pa.) third three-pointer of the game ended a 10-2 Mountain Cat burst to make it 61-50.
Branch's three-pointer with five minutes left pushed the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 72-56, before Novak gave the Mountain Cats their largest lead of the game and set the final at 84-67 with a three-pointer and free-throw with under a minute to play.
Grubbs, who sat on the bench for most of the first half with two quick fouls, scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half. Grubbs shot 6-10 from the floor and 3-4 from the free-throw line and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Novak had 15 points and four assists, while Branch finished with 15 points and three assists. Byer collected 14 points, including 3-5 from three-point range, and five assists, and Rudy Roberts (Cleveland, OH) chipped in 10 points off of the bench. Head Coach Bob Rukavina also got nine points from Miller and eight rebounds and four assists from Noah Hartung (Butler, Pa.).
Hall's game-high 17 points and six rebounds led Bloomsburg. Larry Webster and Ruben Britt chipped in 11 points apiece for the Huskies, who had their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-3.
Pitt-Johnstown is breaking for the holiday season. The Mountain Cats will open the Spring Semester with three straight road games, before hosting WVIAC rival Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday, January 16 as part of a doubleheader with the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
