Mountain Cats Fall at Davis & Elkins, 78-51

Davis & Elkins (WV) College used a 21-8 run to end the first half and a 30-11 run in the second half to hand the Mountain Cats a 78-51 road loss, Thursday night. Noah Hartung's (Butler, Pa.) game-high 17 points paced Pitt-Johnstown, which dropped its third straight game and fell to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the WVIAC.
Patrick Grubbs' (Turtle Creek, Pa.) lay-up gave the Mountain Cats a 5-0 lead 2:33 into the game. Davis & Elkins battled back to tie it, 8-8, on Dorian Valentine's dunk 3:48 later.
The Senators took the lead and never gave it back at 16-14 on another Valentine basket at the midway mark that ignited at 21-8 Davis & Elkins run to close out the half. Reggie Cook's three-pointer pushed the lead to 35-18 at 3:52, before Grubb's jumper in the lane cut it to 37-20.
The Senators answered with a breakaway lay-up from P.J. Turner with two minutes remaining to make it 37-20. Two free-throws from Grubbs ended the first half with the Mountain Cats down 37-22.
Pitt-Johnstown battled back with an 11-4 run of its own to start the second half. Andy Byer's (Tire Hill, Pa.) bucket at 17:13 cut the deficit to 41-33.
Davis & Elkins had another answer and built the lead to 19 at 58-39 on Cook's three-pointer at 12:11. Hartung's basket cut the lead to 17 points the next trip down the floor, but it never got any closer. The Senators continued on a 30-11 run and made it 71-44 with 6:46 to play.
The Senators maintained at least a 21-point lead the rest of the way, before going on the the 27-point win.
Pitt-Johnstown, which out-rebounded Davis & Elkins 42-35, shot a season-low 40% from the field and just 2-15 from behind the three-point line. The Senators ended the night shooting 45.9% from the field and 9-35 from three-point range. The Mountain Cats also committed 20 turnovers, compared to seven for Davis & Elkins.
Hartung's 17 points on 7-13 shooting from the field and 3-4 from the charity stripe led all scorers. Hartung also had six rebounds, while Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) scored 11 points and Grubbs collected 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Byer had five points and five rebounds, and Rudy Roberts (Cleveland, OH) pulled down eight rebounds.
Danny Manuel and Turner each scored 15 points, while Cook and Valentine had 14 points apiece. Jabez Wallace grabbed eight rebounds, and Turner dished out 12 assists to lead the Senators, who improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats will host WVIAC doubleheaders with the Lady Cats against Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday and Shepherd (WV) University on Monday. The Lady Cats will tip-off on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m. On Monday, the Lady Cats play at 5:30 p.m., with the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
