Mountain Cats Dominate Boards in 77-75 Win at Glenville State

The Mountain Cats out rebounded Glenville State (WV) College by 25and built a 12-point second half lead, but had to hold on for a 77-75 road victory, Saturday night. Andy Byer (Tire Hill, Pa.) led four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double-figures to help the Mountain Cats improve to 9-8 overall and 5-7 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats and Pioneers exchanged the lead 12 times in the first 14 minutes of the game, before Pitt-Johnstown used a 12-0 run to open-up a 38-28 lead with 2:38 left.
Byer's three-pointer gave the Mountain Cats a slim 16-15 lead, but Glenville State answered to take an 18-16 lead of its own on a three-pointer from Gabe Gibbs nine minutes into the half.
Jordan Miller (Mineral Point, Pa.) put the Mountain Cats back up 23-20 with a three-pointer, and another Miller three-pointer at 4:40 broke a 26-26 tie to start Pitt-Johnstown's 12-0 run. The Mountain Cats went up 31-28 on Danny Branch's (Washington, D.C.) tip-in off of an inbound pass, before Miller connected on yet another three-pointer to end the run and put Pitt-Johnstown up 38-28.
Glenville State cut it to 40-33, but Nick Novak's (Murrysville, Pa.) jumper from the free-throw line at the buzzer gave the Mountain Cats a 42-33 halftime advantage.
Byer's lay-up and free-throw to open the second half increased the lead to 45-33. The Pioneers pulled to within 47-41 on Nick Dent's three-pointer at 17:30, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly pushed it back out to 10 at 51-41 on another Byer three-pointer less than a minute later.
Glenville State battled back to get the lead down to 76-75 on Delorean White's free-throws with three seconds to play, but Novak followed by hitting one of two free-throws to seal the victory.
Pitt-Johnstown out rebounded Gelnville State 63-38, including holding a 28-13 advantage on the offensive end. The Mountain Cats shot 37.1% from the field, 6-15 from three-point range and 19-31 from the free-throw line, while holding the Pioneers to just 32.4% shooting. Glenville State hit 13 three-pointers and was 16-17 from the charity stripe.
Byer made three three-pointer and finished with 17 points to pace Pitt-Johnstown. Branch had 13 points and eighr rebounds, and Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) chipped in 11 points. Miller rounded out the double-figure scores with 10 points and eight boards. Rudy Roberts (Cleveland, OH) had eight points and 11 rebounds, while Noah Hartung (Butler, Pa.) had six points and nine rebounds.
Dobson led the way for Glenville State with a game-high 25 points and five rebounds. Gibbs ended with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers, who fell to 5-12 overall and 4-8 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats return home to host three straight WVIAC doubleheaders with the Lady Cats. Pitt-Johnstown will play Seton Hill University on Monday, Concord (WV) University on Thursday and Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday. The Lady Cats will tip-off all three doubleheaders at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
