West Liberty Upsets No. 8 Wrestlers With Win in Final Bout

West Liberty (WV) University erased a 17-4 deficit by winning the final four bouts, including #7-ranked J.D. Ramsey's major decision over Josh Krupa (Bedford, Pa.) in the heavyweight bout to give the Hilltoppers a 20-17 victory over No. 8-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers, Friday night in the Sports Center. the Mountain Cats slipped to 0-1.
The Hilltoppers battled back from a 17-4 deficit to cut it to 17-16 with a win at 197 lbs, before Ramsey lifted West Liberty to the victory with an 11-3 major decision over Krupa in the night's final match.
The Mountain Cats started fast with major decisions from Dave Fogle (Summerhill, Pa.) at 125 lbs. and NCAA No. 3 Ryan Link (Cresson, Pa.) at 133 lbs. and a decision from No. 3-ranked Jack Bachman (Greensburg, Pa.) at 141 lbs. Fogle defeated Joe Wagstaff, 10-1, and Link took care of Dillon Nolte, 19-7, before Bachman pushed the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 11-0 with a 9-3 win over Super Region I No. 5-ranked Nick Wycoff.
The Hilltoppers got on the scoreboard at 149 lbs. with Art Hobley's 17-4 major decision over Nick Katich (Louisville, OH).
The Mountain Cats responded with two straight wins to regain control. Pitt-Johnstown got the three points right back with Joe Paolo's (Weirton, WV) 6-2 decision over Mike Emery at 157 lbs. Then, in a pair of 2011 NCAA Qualifiers at 165 lbs., Zach Lundgren (DuBois, Pa.) earned a 6-2 decision over Jarrod Shaw to increase the Mountain Cat lead to 17-4.
West Liberty continued to battle and won the next three matches. At 174 lbs., Jordan Nolan pinned Travis McKillop (Lower Burrell, Pa.) at 3:19, and Matt Littleton won an 8-6 overtime decision over Gary Lantz (Delta, Pa.) at 184 lbs. Derrick Williams followed with a 9-6 decision over Zak Newton (Cresson, Pa.) at 197 to cut the Hilltoppers' deficit to 17-16 to set up the heavyweight match.
With the win, West Liberty improved to 1-0.
The Mountain Cats will host 14th-ranked University of Findlay (OH) on Friday, December 2 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to the 2011 Penn State Open on December 4.
