02/23/2009

Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) broke the Lady Cat single-game scoring record with 44 points on her way to leading Pitt-Johnstown to a record-setting 132-51 victory over Salem International (WV) University, Monday evening in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats, who improved to 16-10 overall and 14-5 in the WVIAC, also broke the team-single-game scoring record with 132 points.
Cale's 44 points broke Denise Gallo and Jen Tuscano's record of 42 in a game. Gallo scored 42 against Saint Vincent College in 1994, before Tuscano matched her with 42 points against California University (PA) in 1997. The 132 points by the team broke the old record of 119 against Davis & Elkins (WV) College set on Feb. 14, 1990, while the 71 points scored in the second half set the single-half scoring record of 67 set against Gannon University during the 1989-90 season.
The Lady Cats ran out to a 28-8 lead on Cale's layup 7:37 into the game and never looked back. Pitt Johnstown pushed the lead to 30 points at the 1:31 mark on Qiuana Brown's (Monroeville, Pa.) three-pointer, before taking a 61-29 halftime advantage. Cale finished the first half with 15 points on 7-9 shooting in just 10 minutes of action.
Pitt-Johnstown extended the lead to 88-39 on Cale's three-pointer 7:30 into the second half. Kristin Irwin's (Bellefonte, Pa.) three-pointer with 5:10 to play made the score 120-47 and broke the previous Lady Cat team single-game points mark of 119, before Cale took over the individual single-game scoring record on a lay-up with :38 remaining on the clock.
Cale led all scorers with 44 points on 18-27 shooting from the field, 4-8 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.) and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) each scored 17 points. Gennett pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists, and Dalton added eight rebounds. Brown chipped in 15 points and tied Monae Baker's (Bushkill, Pa.) game-high of 11 rebounds, while Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) and Irwin rounded out the six Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 14 and 13 points respectively. Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) dished out a career-high 15 assists in the victory.
Cale is currently in 23rd place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,092 career-points. Cale needs 43 points to tie Carol Mumma (1978-82) for 22nd place on the scoring list.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 55.6% (55-99) from the field, 13-29 from behind the three-point range and a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line. The Lady Cats, who out rebounded Salem International 59-23, also forced 21 turnovers and held the Tigers to just 37.3% shooting from the field.
Jessica Lockett's 22 points and seven rebounds and Melissa Anger's 20 points and seven rebounds led the way for Salem International, which dropped to 0-26 overall and 0-19 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will wrap-up the regular season and celebrate Senior Day and Alumni Day with a WIVAC doubleheader against Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday in the Sports Center.
