Lady Cats Fall 66-58 to Shepherd on Senior Day and Alumni Day

Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) collected a double-double of 19 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, but the Lady Cat basketball team was not able to battle back from from a 10-point halftime deficit and suffered a 66-58 loss to Shepherd (WV) University Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center on Senior Day and Alumni Day. Pitt-Johnstown is now 16-11 overall and 14-6 in the WVIAC.
Prior to tip-off, head coach Sasha Palmer and the Lady Cat basketball program recognized this year's seniors, Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.).
Katie Warehime's jumper at the 12:42 mark gave Shepherd a 19-9 lead. The Lady Cats responded with a 12-6 run over the next 4:51 capped by a pair of Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) free-throws to cut the deficit to 25-21. However, the Lady Rams extended the lead to 36-23 an Warehime's layup with 2:48 to play, before taking a 38-28 halftime lead.
Shepherd built the advantage back to 13 point four minutes into the second half. Once again, Pitt-Johnstown answered. This time, the Lady Cats used an 11-2 run, highlighted by seven points from Baker, to cut the lead to 46-42 3:17 later. The Lady Rams pushed the lead back to eight points on on another Warehime basket with just under 10 minutes to play. Cale's free-throws at the 6:35 mark pulled Pitt-Johnstown to within 57-53, but that was as close as the Lady Cats would get, before suffering the eight-point loss.
Baker led three Lady Cats who scored in double-figures with 19 points on 6-14 shooting from the field, 1-2 from three-point range and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Ten of her career-high 19 rebounds came on the offensive end. Aden added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Cale rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and three rebounds. Irwin chipped in five rebounds for coach Sasha Palmer.
Pitt-Johnstown, which out rebounded Shepherd 48-38 and held a 23-13 advantage on the offensive glass, could not overcome 32.2% (19-59) shooting and 23 turnovers. The Lady Cats were also just 3-18 from behind the three-point line and 17-30 from the free-throw line, while the Lady Rams connected on 44.8% (30-67) from the field and 5-8 from the charity stripe.
Cale is currently in 23rd place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,103 career-points. Cale needs 32 points to tie Carol Mumma (1978-82) for 22nd place on the scoring list.
Warehime led Shepherd with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Krissy Grosselin netted 12 points and Jerica Hewett scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Lady Rams, who improved to 14-13 overall and 11-9 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will host an opening round WVIAC Tournament game against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center. A victory on Monday, would send the Lady Cats to the WVIAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday in Charleston, WV .
