Lady Cats Stumble, 79-73, Saturday at Ashland

Senior foward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted game-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enought to lead the Lady Cats to a win, as Ashland (OH) University dealt Pitt Johnstown a 79-73 road loss, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Head Coach Jodi Gault's Lady Cats fell to 15-6.
Zapf finished the day 12-17 from the field and 3-5 from the free-throw line. Ten of her 12 rebonds came on the defensive end. Senior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) was the only other Lady Cat to score in double figures. Krischer had 17 points, four rebounds and a game-high nine assists. Coach Gault also got eight points and six rebounds from senior forward Jami Oaks (South Fork, Pa.), while sophomore forward Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored five points, and Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) and Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) chipped in four points apiece.
Pitt Johnstown shot 51.6% (32-62) from the field, 40.0% (4-10) from behind the three-point line and 55.6% (5-9) from the free-throw line, while holding Ashland to just 33-72 (45.8%) from the field and 1-11 (9.1%) from three-point range. The Eagles also made 12 of their 15 free-throws and out rebounded Pitt Johnstown 40-34, including holding a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
Pitt Johnstown and Ashland battled back-and-forth with nine lead changes in the first half, before the Eagles took a 38-35 halftime lead. Ashland never lost that lead and increased it to 59-50 with 11:24 to play, before going on to the six-point victory.
Catherine Portyrata scored 26 points and pulled down 10 reounds to the lead the Eagles, while Amber Rall tallied 23 points. With the victory, Ashland improved to 12-12 on the season.
The Lady Cats return home to host Edinboro University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and the University of the District of Columbia on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
