03/02/2009

Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored 13 of her game-high 28 points in the first half to help the #5-seeded Lady Cat basketball team advance to Wednesday's WVIAC Tournament Quarterfinals in Charleston, WV with a 62-59 victory over #12 seeded Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University, in Monday's opening round in the Sports Center. Pitt Johnstown, 17-11 on the year, will take on Fairmont State (WV) University at 1 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Lady Cats held Wheeling Jesuit to just 17.9% shooting in the first half on their way to building a 32-12 halftime advantage. After a slow start, Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) layup with 6:58 to play gave Pitt-Johnstown a 19-6 lead. The Lady Cats pushed it out to 28-10 on Cale's lay-up at 3:51, before going into the halftime break with the 20-point lead.
The Cardinals opened the second half on a 9-2 run to pull to within 34-21 with 15:46 to play. The Lady Cats answered with a 13-4 run over the next 4:40, capped by Qiuana Brown's (Monroeville, Pa.) three-pointer, to extend the lead to 47-25 with 11:16 left. Pitt-Johnstown eventually rebuilt the lead to 18 points with 3:07 remaining, but Wheeling Jesuit charged back to outscore the Lady Cats 19-2 and cut the deficit to 60-59 with :25 on the clock. However, Cale's two free-throws with :13 sealed the win for Pitt-Johnstown and sent the team to its first WVIAC Quarterfinals in since joining the conference and playing a conference schedule in 2007-08.
Cale led all scorers with 28 points on 10-17 shooting from the field, 2-4 from three-point range and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Aden was the only other Lady Cat to reach double-figures in scoring. Aden collected 10 points, three rebounds, a game-high seven assists and four steals. Head Coach Sasha Palmer also got eight points apiece from Brown and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.). Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) and Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) chipped in seven and five rebounds, respectively.
Cale is currently in 23rd place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,131 career-points. Cale needs four points to tie Carol Mumma (1978-82) for 22nd place on the scoring list.
After shooting 52% in the first half to build the big lead, the Lady Cats finished the game shooting 46.9% (23-49) from the field, 4-14 from three-point range and 12-16 from the free-throw line. Wheeling Jesuit recovered from the 18% first-half shooting to end the night at 34.5% (20-58). The Cardinals connected on six three-pointers and 13-18 from the charity stripe.
Shayla Holenka's 16 points and five assists led four Wheeling Jesuit players who scored in double-figures. Megan Stuvek (13 points), Lindsay Stuckey (12 points) and Cassy Sanderson (10 points) also scored in double-digits, while Stuvek grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Cardinals, who's season came to an end with a 12-15 overall record.
