Lady Cats Hold on For 73-70 Overtime Win at W.V. State

West Virginia State University used a 24-12 run to erase an 11-point second half deficit and force overtime, but Monae Baker's (Bushkill, Pa.) basket with :08 remaining sealed a 73-70 WVIAC road victory for the Lady Cats, Monday evening. Baker led all scorers with 23 points and 14 rebounds to help Pitt-Johnstown imporove to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
After a tough shooting night at the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday, the Lady Cats came out hot and hit eight of their first 11 shots, including three buckets from Baker, against the Yellow Jackets to open-up an 18-10 lead 6:30 into the game.
West Virginia State batled back to take a 26-25 lead on Keirah Hicks' three-pointer with 6:50 left half, before a free-throw from Danielle Davis increased the lead to 29-25 1:20 later.
However, one of Maria Montini's (Irwin, Pa.) two first half three-pointers sparked a 9-2 Lady Cat run to close out the first half. Stacy Goode's (Pleasant Plain, OH) basket capped the run to give Pitt-Johnstown a 34-31 halftime advantage.
Pitt-Johnstown extended the run to 21-6 to begin the second half and build the lead to 46-35 on Baker's basket and free-throw at the 13:41 mark.
The Yellow Jackets countered to outscore the Lady Cats 24-12 over the next 12 minutes to take a 59-58 lead with 1:50 to play on Alexandria Barnette's basket. The teams exchanged the lead two more times, but Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) free-throw with :42 left tied the game and 62 and forced overtime.
In overtime, Andrea Dalton's (Washington, Pa.) three-pointer at at 3:06 put Pitt-Johnstown up for good at 71-69. Baker's lay-up with :08 remaining set the final at 73-70 after Barnette's three-pointer came up short.
Baker finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-9 shooting from the field and 7-9 from the free-throw line. Aden had 14 points and five rebounds, while Dalton finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) had 11 points, including three three-pointers, and Montini collected nine points, all from behind the three-point line. Kelly Goode (Pleasant Plain, OH) pulled down five rebounds and dished out a game-high eight assists.
Barnette's 16 points led three West Virginia State players who scored in double-figures. Tonesha Members and Davis each scored 12 points, and Tiffany Finkton grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, who fell to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday for a WVIAC game, before hosting conference rival Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
