Lady Cats Open Season with 61-57 Win Over Slippery Rock at Clarion Classic

The new-look Lady Cat basketball team, under first-year Head Coach Sasha Palmer, opened the 2007-08 season in fine-fashion with a 61-57 victory over Slippery Rock University behind 19 points from junior Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) in Friday's First Round of the 2007 Clarion University Classic. Pitt Johnstown will take on Clarion in Saturday final round of the Classic.
The Lady Cats built a 37-28 halftime lead, but had to rally from a 53-49 deficit with 5:49 to play in the game. Pitt Johnstown outscored The Rock 12-4 over the final 5:49 to secure the win.
Cale, who grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks, ended her night shooting 6-15 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) collected 17 points, a team-high nine rebounds, four steals and four blocks, while senior Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double-figures with 11 points. Maurer also had six rebounds, while freshman Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) had eight points and six rebounds. Coach Palmer also got eight rebounds from red-shirt freshman Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) and five rebounds from junior Krista Britcher (Johnstown, Pa.) on a night that saw the Lady Cats out-rebound Slippery Rock, 47-38.
Pitt Johnstown shot 21-56 (37.5%) from the field and 15-17 (88.2%) from the free-throw line. The Rock finished 24-67 (35.8%) from the field and just 5-14 (35.7%) from the free-throw line.
Amanda Nero's game-high 20 points paced Slippery Rock, while KellyAnn Staudinger chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for Slippery Rock.
The Lady Cats will take on the host school in the final round of the Clarion Classic on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
