Lady Cats Suffer 71-57 loss at Shippensburg

First-year Head Coach Sasha Palmer took her Lady Cat basketball team to Shippensburg University, the school she spent four years as an assistant coach, on Sunday, but the homecoming was not a good one, as the Lady Raiders dealt Pitt Johnstown a 71-57 loss. Junior forward Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored a game-high 18 points for the Lady Cats, now 1-2.
Shippensburg climbed out to a 30-16 lead 16 minutes into the game, before the Lady Cats cut the lead to 32-24 at halftime. The Lady Raiders came out in the second half and increaased the lead to 47-29 with 15:49 to play. Pitt Johnstown got the lead down to 61-51 at the 3:26 mark, but that was as close as the Lady Cats would get.
Cale led Pitt Johnstown with 18 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and 4-4 shooting from the free-throw line. Cale also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists. Junior forward Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) and sophomore guard Kaitlin Urban (Johnstown, Pa.) each scored nine points, while Krista Britcher (Johnstown, Pa.) and Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) added seven points apiece. Freshman Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.), Britcher and Irwin pulled down six rebounds each to pace the Lady Cats.
Pitt Johnstown finsihed the day shooting 44.2% (23-52) from the field, 45.5% (5-11) from three-point range and 85.7% (6-7) from the free-throw line, while holding Shippensburg to 29-67 (43.3%) shooting, including 5-16 (31.3%) from behind the three-point line. The Lady Raiders also connected on 8-11 (72.7%) of their free-throws. The Lady Cats and Lady Raiders each had 34 rebounds, but Shippensburg grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and turned them into 22 points. Shippensburg also scored 31 points off of 23 Pitt Johnstown turnovers.
Elise Mercer and Megan Fogle both scored 16 points to lead four Shippensburg players who scored in double figures. Lauren Beckley chipped in 14 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds to help the Lady Raiders improve to 2-1.
The Lady Cats travel to Seton Hill University on Wednesday to open the WVIAC schedule, before making their 2007-08 home debut against conference rival Ohio Valley (WV) University on Tuesday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
