Lady Cats Suffer, 96-48, Loss at California (PA)

Head Coach Sasha Palmer's Lady Cat basketball team shot just 5-25 from the field in the first half and trailed, 44-11, at halftime, before suffering a, 96-48, non-conference loss, Sunday afternoon at California University (PA). Freshman Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.)scored 14 points off the bench to lead Pitt Johnstown, now 2-5 on the year.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 30-8 lead led 13 minutes into the game, before taking the 33-point halftime lead. California (PA), which forced 36 Lady Cat turnovers and converted them into a 36-9advantage in points off of turnovers, continued their dominance in the second half and cruised to the victory.
Aden scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Aden also grabbed five rebounds, while junior Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) added 10 points, including 5-6 from the free-throw line, and four rebounds. Senior Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) tallied six points, and sophomore Chrissy Forster (Lewisberry, Pa.) had six points and five rebounds. Junior Krista Britcher (Johnstown, Pa.) forward paced Pitt Johnstown with a team-high six rebounds in the loss.
After shooting just 20.0% in the first half, the Lady Cats improved to 50.0% (12-24) in the second half, before finishing the game at 34.7%. Pitt Johnstown made 13 of its 21 free-throws (61.9%), but shot just 1-11 from behind the three-point line. The Vulcans shot 49.4% (44-89) from the field and hit seven of their nine free-throws. California (PA) also held a 48-35 advantage in rebounding and outscored the Lady Cats, 56-24, in the paint.
Kayla Smith's game-highs of 29 points and nine rebounds led four California (PA) players who scored in double figures. Brooque Williams chipped in 22 points and eight rebounds. Crystal Andrews (14 points) and Amber Dubyak (12 points) rounded out the double figures scorers for the Vulcans, who improved to 5-2 on the season.
After breaking for finals and the holiday season, the Lady Cats will open the spring semester with a non-conference game against Indiana University (PA) on Wednesday, January 2 at 5:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats. The Mountain Cats will take on Shippensburg University at 7:30 p.m.
