Brown's Lay-up Gives Lady Cats 65-63 Win Over Wesleyan

01/25/2010

Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) scored a game-high 20 points, but it was Qiuana Brown's (Monroeville, Pa.) lay-up with three-seconds remaining that gave the Lady Cats a 65-63 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College, Monday evening in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown, which erased a 10-point second half deficit, improved to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in the WVIAC.
West Virginia Wesleyan tied it at 63 on Danae Hill's basket with eight seconds left, but Aden took the in-bound pass at half court and found Brown running unguarded down the side of the court for an easy lay-up to seal the win. Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.) made a steal on the Lady Bobcats' in-bound play and held the ball until the horn sounded.
Montini opened the game with a three-pointer for the Lady Cats, but that would be Pitt-Johnstown's only lead of the first half.
West Virginia Wesleyan used a 17-5 over the next 5:27 to open-up a 17-8 lead on Jamie Kaufman's lay-up.
Montini and Aden kept Pitt-Johnstown in the game by combining to score 25 of the Lady Cats' 29 first-half points.
Another Montini three-pointer cut the deficit to 23-19 with 9:37 remaining, before the Lady Bobcats pushed the lead back out to eight just over a minute later. A pair of Aden free-throws with just under five minutes made it 29-25, but West Virginia Wesleyan outscored Pitt-Johnstown 8-4 the rest of the way to build a 37-29 halftime advantage.
Briana Welch's basketball two minutes into the second half gave the Lady Bobcats their first double-digit lead of the evening at 41-31.
Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) scored five of Pitt-Johnstown's next eight points to help the Lady Cats cut it to 42-39 at 14:37. Montini's fifth three-pointer knotted the score at 44 the next time down the floor, before the Lady Cats finally regained the lead at 46-44 on Aden's bucket with 12:38 left.
After exchanging baskets the next few trips, the Lady Bobcats built a 58-50 lead with 5:32 on the clock. Pitt-Johnstown battled back to tie it at 60 with a 12-2 run over the next 3:26 on Aden's free-throws and took a 63-60 lead on Brown's three-pointer at the 1:21 mark. West Virginia Wesleyan tied it at 63 1:13 later, but Brown's lay-up gave Pitt-Johnstown the two-point win.
The Lady Cats overcame 23 turnovers. Pitt-Johnstown shot 43.1% from the field, 9-22 from three-point range and 12-16 from the free-throw line. West Virginia Wesleyan wrapped-up the night shooting 41.3% and 10-14 from the charity stripe. The Lady Bobcats shot just four three-pointers and made one.
Aden led all scorers with 20 points on 6-11 shooting and 8-11 from the free-throw line. Aden also grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists, while Montini finished with 19 points, including a career-high five three pointers. Dalton rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double-figures with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Brown scored all of her eight points in the second half and pulled down seven rebounds.
Lydia Bridenbaugh paced West Virginia Wesleyan with 18 points. Welch had 12 points. Angela Tassari and Kaufman each had eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Bobcats, who slipped to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the WVIAC.
