Lady Cats Fall to Colorado Mines, 74-70

Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) scored 20 points and Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 16 points and five rebounds, but Colorado School of Mines took the lead with 1:17 to play and went on to defeat the Lady Cat basketball team, 74-70, Saturday afternoon at the Regis University Tournament in Denver, Colo. Pitt-Johnstown is now 2-2.
Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD) scored six early points to help the Lady Cats run out to a 12-6 lead six minutes into the game. Colorado School of Mines cut it to two on a Brecca Gaffney lay-up, but Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) answered with a three-pointer at 10:33 to push the lead back to five at 17-12.
Gaffney's lay-up and free-throw tied the score at 26 with 3:37 left in the first half, but Kelly Goode (Cincinnati, OH) hit a three-pointer to cap a quick 5-0 Pitt-Johnstown run and extend the lead to 31-26 1:40 later.
Colorado School of Mines knotted the score at 33 with :40 left, before Loughner gave Pitt-Johnstown a slim 35-33 halftime advantage with a bucket as time was running out.
The Orediggers battled back to take a 43-41 on Taylor McBain's basket four minutes into the second half, but another Goode three-pointer at 13:06 put the Lady Cats back in front, 48-45.
Colorado School of Mines eventually built a 60-54 lead, but once again, the Lady Cats clawed their way back with an 11-3 run over the next three minutes to go up 65-63 at the 3:31 mark.
However, Gaffney scored again in the paint with 1:17 on the clock to put the Oredigger up 68-67. Colorado School of Mines would never give up the lead and held on for the four-point victory.
Dalton led three Lady Cats who scored in double-figures with 20 points and four rebounds. Aden scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting and 6-8 from the free-throw line and pulled down five rebounds, while Goode had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Loughner finished with eight points, all in the first half, and Trimarco chipped in six points and a game-high 10 assists.
The Lady Cats shot 44.2% (23-52) from the floor, 6-22 from three-pooint range and 18-25 from the charity stripe. The Orediggers ended the day shooting 45% from the field, 6-18 from behind the three-point line and 14-20 from the free-throw line.
Gaffney paced Colorado School of Mines with game highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds. Angie Charchalis scored 18 points, and Allie Grazulis tallied 14 points for the Orediggers, who improved to 3-1.
The Lady Cats continue a stretch of five straight road contests with conference games at West Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday and Glenville State (WV) College on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown will play its next home game on December 8 when Slippery Rock University visits the Sports Center for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m.
