02/01/2010

The Lady Cats battled back from a pair of seven-point second half deficits to cut it to one with 9.4 second to play, but their final shot was blocked and Pitt-Johnstown suffered a 57-56 loss to Seton Hill University, Monday evening in the Sports Center. Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown, which dropped its third straight game and fell to 9-9 overall and 6-7 in the WVIAC.
Down by one, Pitt-Johnstown got the ball back with 9.4 seconds on the clock, but Andrea Dalton's (Washington, Pa.) jump shot from the elbow was blocked by Katie Lintner and Seton Hill held on for the one-point win.

Seton Hill built a 12-3 lead six minutes into the game, but Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Griffins 29-13 the rest of the half to take a 32-25 lead at the intermission.
Lintner's jumper put Seton Hill up by nine at 14:02, before the Lady Cats used a 15-0 run over the next 4:32 to go up 15 -13 on Sara Trimarco's (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) three-pointer. A Brown three-pointer extended the lead to 18-14 at the nine-minute mark.
The Griffins knotted the score at 20 on a basket by Jordan Burkes, and took a 25-22 lead on Clare Berenato's bucket at 4:35.
However, Brown's fourth three-pointer of the half gave the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown at 27-25. A pair of free-throws from Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) with 2:13 remaining gave Pitt-Johnstown the seven point halftime lead.
Seton Hill opened the second half on a 17-3 run, including eight straight points to start the half, to regain the lead, 38-34. Joya Whittington's lay-up 4:29 into the second half put Seton Hill up 33-32, and Burkes' steal and lay-up pushed the advantage to 42-35 at 12:34.
The Lady Cats answered on Dalton's three-pointer midway through the half to cut it to 44-43, but the Griffins quickly extended it back to seven at 50-43 on a three-pointer from Jenna Petrini with just under nine minutes left.
Pitt-Johnstown battled back again. Dalton's three-pointer cut the lead to 55-54 with 2:32 to play. Two more Aden free-throws with 50 second put Pitt-Johnstown back into the lead at 56-55. Burkes hit two free-throws 12 seconds later to give the lead back to Seton Hill.
The Lady Cats, who shot just 33.9% from the field, hit nine three-pointers and were 7-10 from the free-throw line. Seton Hill ended the night shooting 35.2% from the floor and 3-12 from behind the three-point line. However, the Griffins connected on 16-17 from the charity stripe.
Brown led Pitt-Johnstown with 17 points on 6-12 shooting, including 5-8 from three-point range. Trimarco was the only other Lady Cat to hit double-figures. Trimarco had 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Aden and Dalton netted eight points apiece, while Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) had nine points and seven rebounds.
Burkes' game-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds led the way for Seton Hill. Lintner had 12 points and five rebounds, while Jill Emberg scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Griffins, who improved to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will host WVIAC doubleheaders with the Mountain Cats against Concord (WV) University on Thursday and Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday for Alumni Night. The Lady Cats will tip-off both doubleheaders at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
