Second Half Run Dooms Lady Cats at Wesleyan

Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) collected a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, but West Virginia Wesleyan College used an 18-2 run over a four minute span in the second half to break a tie game and hand the Lady Cat basketbll team a 75-59 road loss on Tuesday. Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the WVIAC.
West Virginia Wesleyan climbed out to a 13-6 lead nine minutes into the game. Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) put the Lady Cats up 4-2, but the Bobcats outscored Pitt-Johnstown 11-2 over the next 6:30 to take the six-point lead on Daria Abros'kina's basket at 11:15.
The Lady Cats got the deficit down to one on two occasions, before Kayla Loughner's (Brinklow, MD) three-pointer knotted the score at 20 with just over four minutes left in the half. Pitt-Johnstown continued on its 21-13 run to close out the half and regained the lead at 22-21 on another Dalton bucket.
Stacy Goode's (Cincinnati, OH) lay-up at 2:24 gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the half at 27-23, but Abros'kina connected on a three-pointer to cut the Lady Cat advantage to 27-26 at the half.
The Bobcats scored the first six points of the second half to go up 31-27, but a three-pointer by Grace Hyland (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and a lay-up from Aden quickly gave Pitt-Johnstown the lead back at 32-21.
However, with the score tied at 36, West Virginia Wesleyan used an 18-2 run over the next 4:00, capped by a Danae Hill lay-up, to take control and build a 54-38 lead with 8:46 to play.
The Lady Cats answered with a pair of free-throws from Aden to pull within 12 at 56-44 at 5:55, but the Bobcats pushed the lead to 19 points with 2:57 on the clock, before cruising to the 16-point win.
Aden led Pitt-Johnstown with 16 points and 10 rebounds on 5-13 shooting and 6-6 from the free-throw line. Dalton scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Loughner rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double-figures with 10 points. Kelly Goode (Cincinnati, OH) added eight points off the bench.
Aden currently stands in 18th-place on the Lady Cats All-Time Scoring List with 1,192 points and 27th on the all-time rebounding list with 449 rebounds, while Dalton is 34 points shy of becoming Pitt-Johnstown's 33rd 1,000-point scorer. Dalton also ranks 30th on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List with 396.
The Lady Cats ended the night shooting 40% (24-60) from the field, but just 3-13 from three-point range. Pitt-Johnstown hit 8-12 from the free-throw line. West Virginia Wesleyan shot 53.6% (30-56) from the floor, 5-13 from behind the three-point line and 10-17 from the charity stripe. The Bobcats also out-rebounded Pitt-Johnstown 39-30.
West Virginia Wesleyan got game-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds from Jamie Kaufman and 20 points and nine rebounds from Lydia Bridenbaugh. Abros'kina had 16 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Brianna Welch scored 11 points to help the Bobcats improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
The Lady Cats travel to Glenville State (WV) College on Saturday, before returning home to host a non-conference game against Slippery Rock Unviersity on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
