Lady Cats Earn, 42-41, Win at West Virginia Wesleyan

Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) scored 12 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists as the Lady Cat basketball team held West Virginia Wesleyan College to just 23.8% shooting for the game in a, 42-41, road win, Saturday afternoon. Head Coach Sasha Palmer's team snapped a six-game losing skid and improved to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the WVIAC.
Pitt Johnstown took a slim, 22-21, halftime lead after holding the Bobcats to just 7-33 shooting in the first half. Things didn't get much better for West Virginia Wesleyan in the second half. The Lady Cats held the Bobcats to just eight field goals, before West Virginia Wesleyan ended the game shooting just 15-63 from the field. Pitt Johnstown, which escaped 25 turnovers, shot only 37.5% from the field but it was good enough to earn the victory. The Lady Cats also out rebounded the Bobcats, 47-29, including holding a, 41-22, advantage on the offensive end.
Along with Irwin, senior forward Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Chrissy Forster (Lewisberry, Pa.) collected six points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Coach Palmer also got eight points and four rebounds from freshman Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) and four points and five rebounds from Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) in the win.
Pitt Johnstown finished the day shooting 17-45 (37.8%) from the field, 1-9 (11.1%) from three-points range and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free-throw line. West Virginia Wesleyan was 3-10 (30.0%) from behind the three-point line and 8-9 (88.9%) from the free-throw line.
Sarah Van Horn scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds, while Lucia Darling chipped in 11 points in the loss, which dropped the Bobcats to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in WVIAC play.
The Lady Cats return home to host WVIAC rival Seton Hill University on Thursday as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
