Lady Cats Suffer 86-61 Loss at Charleston

Senior forward Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) poured in a career-high 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds, but the University of Charleston (WV) built a 40-26 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Lady Cats, 86-61, in WVIAC play, Saturday evening. Pitt Johnstown slipped to 4-10 overall and 3-4 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats and Golden Eagles battled to a 17-17 tie eight minutes into the game, but Charleston went on a 23-9 run to over the next 11 minutes to take a 40-26 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 65-37 with 12:20 to play, before going on to the 25-point win.
Maurer's 23 points on 8-14 shooting from the field, 5-8 from behind the three-point line and 2-2 from the free-throw line led three Lady Cats who scored in double figures. Freshman Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) tallied 14 points and five assists, while fellow freshman Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points. Aden also grabbed six rebounds. Junior Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored eight points and blocked four shots, and sophomore guard Chrissy Forster (Lewisberry, Pa.) tied Maurer for team-high in rebounds with nine.
Pitt Johnstown struggled from the field, shooting just 31.4% (22-70). The Lady Cats connected on seven three-pointers and made 10 of their 13 free-throws. The Golden Eagles wrapped up the evening shooting 35-76 (46.1%) from the field, 3-6 (50.0%) from three-point range and 13-15 (86.7%) from the free-throw line.
Jihan Williams scored a game-high 24 points on 10-15 shooting and 4-5 from the free-throw line and had five rebounds to lead Charleston. Jennifer DeMeyer added 16 points and Jalyssa Jackson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 11-6 overall and 8-2 in WVIAC play.
The Lady Cats return home to begin a three-game home stand starting with Bluefield State (WV) College as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats on Thursday. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
