Lady Cats Hit Free-throws, Hold Off West Liberty For 69-65 Win

Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and the Lady Cats connected on 19-23 from the free-thrwow line, including 6-6 in the final minute to secure a 69-65 road win at West Liberty (WV) University on Thursday. Pitt-Johnstown made it three straight wins and improved to 12-9 overall and 9-7 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats ran out to an 18-8 lead 6:43 into the game. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.), Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) and Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) combined to score Pitt-Johnstown's first 15 points, before Kelly Goode's (Pleasant Plain, OH) three-pointer at 13:17 put the Lady Cats up by 10.
West Liberty battled back with a 16-8 run over the next 5:37 to pull within two on Tori Hansen's jumper at 7:40. The Lady Cats regained a nine-point lead at 33-24 on Monae Baker's (Bushkill, Pa.) free-throw 1:26 later.
However, the Lady Hilltoppers outscored Pitt-Johnstown 15-4 over the final 6:14 of the half to take a 39-37 halftime lead. Jenni Robbins hit consecutive three-pointers to cut the deficit to two, and Hanen's basket with 1:37 left tied the score at 35. Robbins followed with a pair of free-throws after Dalton was assessed a technical foul to put West Liberty in the lead. Another Hansen bucket made it 39-35, but two free-throws from Baker with :49 seconds remaining cut it 39-37 going into the intermission.
Meghan Wiseman's bucket to start the second half gave the Lady Hilltoppers a 41-37 lead, but Aden scored the next four points, and Stacy Goode's (Pleasant Plain, OH) fast break bucket put Pitt-Johnstown back into the lead, 43-41, with 16 minutes to play.
Pitt-Johnstown slowly built the lead back up to eight points at 61-53 on Dalton's lay-up at 5:48. West Liberty pulled to within three with just under a minute left, but the Lady Cats hit six straight from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the four-point win.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 41.8 percent from the field, while holding the Lady Hilltoppers to just 33.3% shooting. The Lady Cats were also 19-23 (82.6) from the free-throw line. West Liberty hit 15-20 from the charity stripe.
Dalton led Pitt-Johnstown with 18 points on 8-11 shooting and 2-3 from three-point range. Aden finished with 15 points and four rebounds, while Baker rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
With her 15 points, Aden moved into 31st-place on the Lady Cat All-time Scoring List with 1,015 points. She is now 20 points away from Deb Deaner (1975-79) for 30th-place and 21 points shy of Helen Young (1999-03) for 29th-place.
Hansen scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead West Liberty. Wiseman had 18 points and five rebounds, and Robbins added 16 points and five rebounds for the Lady Hilltoppers, who dropped their second straight game and slipped to 13-7 overall and 9-6 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown will host Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Saturday for a doubleheader on Breast Cancer Awareness Night and a tribute to the late Jody Billingsley. The Lady Cats will also host Ohio Valley (WV) University on Monday. The Lady Cats will tip-off both doubleheaders at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
