Lady Cats Win Fifth Straight, 67-52 Over Ohio Valley

The Lady Cats, winners of five straight, used a 20-4 run over the end of the first half and the start of the second half to break open a tie game en route to a 67-52 conference win over Ohio Valley (WV) University, Monday evening in the Sports Center. Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) scored 13 points to lead five Lady Cats who scored in double-figures. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 14-9 overall and 11-7 in the WVIAC.
Kendra Benedict's lay-up 6:27 into the game gave Ohio Valley an 8-5 lead, but the Lady Cats scored the next 10 points to go up 15-8. Baker and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) hit back-to-back three-pointer to give Pitt-Johntown its first lead of the night at 12:52. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) knocked down two free-throws, and Dalton followed with two of her 12 first half points off of Aden's steal to increase the lead to 15-8 with 10:41 left.
The Lady Scots battled back with a 12-2 run over the next 3:28 to retake the lead, 20-17, on a three-pointer from Danielle Sams.
After another Sams three-pointer tied the game at 25 at the 4:14 mark, Pitt-Johnstown scored the six straight, including five by Kelly Goode (Pleasant Plain, OH), to close out the half with the Lady Cats leading 31-25.
Pitt-Johnstown broke things open early in the second half. The Lady Cats extended the 6-0 to 20-4 to open the second half and build the lead to 45-29 on a Aden's basket at 16:06.
Two free-throws from Aden 8:25 into the second half increased the lead to 52-31. Ohio Valley got as close as 15 on a bucket by Benedict with under 10 second to play, but that's how it ended.
The Lady Cats shot 38.3% from the field, 6-23 from three-point range and 15-18 from the free-throw line, while holding the Lady Scots to 36.5% shooting. Ohio Valley was also 6-16 from behind the three-point line and 8-12 from the charity stripe.
Baker finished with 13 points on 5-7 shooting, 1-1 from three-point range and 2-3 from the free-throw line. Baker also pulled down five rebounds. Dalton scored all 12 of her points int he first half and grabbed five rebounds, while Goode and Aden chipped in 10 points apiece. Goode had six rebounds and Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) had eight points for Pitt-Johnstown.
With her 10 points, Aden moved into a tie for 26th-place with Lynne Ashbridge (1986-90) on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,048 points. She is now three points away from Crystal Barr (2000-04) for 25th-place and seven points shy of Janet Kartovicky (1983-87) for 24th-place. Aden also ranks 29th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 401 career rebounds. She is 16 rebounds away from Janet Hess (1991-95) for 28th-place.
Denae Beavers scored a game-high 17 points to lead Ohio Valley. Sams had 11 points and Benedict tallied 10 points for the Lady Scots, who suffered their 11th consecutive loss and fell to 4-18 overall and 2-15 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to WVIAC doubleheaders at Salem International (WV) University on Thursday and Seton Hill on Saturday, before celebrating Senior Night with a conference doubleheader against Fairmont State (WV) University on Tuesday, January 23 beginning at 5:30 in the Sports Center.
