Lady Cats Make Salem Int'l. Sixth Straight Win

The Lady Cats used a 22-9 run to close out the first half and build a 14-point halftime lead to extend their winning streak to six games with a 69-51 victory at Salem International (WV) University on Thursday. Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) added 16 points to lead the Lady Cats. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 15-9 overall and 12-7 in the WVIAC.
After falling behind 4-2 early, the Lady Cats outscored Salem International 7-2 over the next 2:40. Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) tied it at four the next trip down the floor, before Dalton's basket at 15:10 put Pitt-Johnstown up 9-6.
The Lady Tigers cut it to 10-9 on a Christina Suarez free-throw at 12:58, but the Lady Cats began to take control after that.
Pitt-Johnstown used a 22-9 run to close out the half and build a 14-point lead at the intermission. Two free-throws from Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) at 7:13 gave Pitt-Johnstown its first double-digit lead at 19-9. The Lady Cats extended it to 14 on Kayla Loughner's (Brinklow, MD) conventional three-point play with just over two minutes left in the half. Salem International pulled to within 11 with 28 seconds remaining, but Kelly Goode (Pleasant Plain, OH) connected on a three-pointer as time was running out to to give Pitt-Johnstown a 32-18 advantage.
The Lady Tigers pulled to within 35-26 2:18 into the second half on Brianna Terry's jumper, but it never got any closer. Pitt-Johnstown quickly got it back into double-digits, and Brown's fifth three-pointer of the evening at the 12-minute mark gave the Lady Cats a 47-32 lead.
The Lady Cats continued to increase their lead and never led the Lady Tigers get closer than 16. Maria Montini's (Irwin, Pa.) three-pointer made it 65-43 with 4:48 to play and Pitt-Johnstown cruised the rest of the way to the lopsided victory.
Pitt-Johnstown overcame 36.9% from the field and 9-30 from three-point range. The Lady Cats were also 12-15 from the free-throw line. Salem International shot just 36.7% and was 0-5 from behind the three-point line.
Brown paced Pitt-Johnstown with 17 points on 6-10 shooting, including 5-6 from three-point range. Dalton had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Goode collected eight points, three rebounds and four assists. Loughner chipped in sseven points off the bench.
Aden scored four points to move into 25th-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,052 points. She is now three points away from Janet Kartovicky (1983-87) for 24th-place. Aden also ranks 29th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 402, 15 shy of Janet Hess (1991-95) for 28th-place.
Flora Amayo led the way for Salem International with 17 points. Terry had 16 points and seven rebounds, while Rachel Morris and Casey Mitchell each had nine rebounds for the Lady Tigers, who fell to 0-23 overall and 0-18 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to a WVIAC doubleheader at Seton Hill University on Saturday, before celebrating Senior Night with a conference doubleheader against Fairmont State (WV) University on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 in the Sports Center.
