Buzzer Beater Leads Shepherd Over Lady Cats

Shelby Fayak's jumper as time expired erased a one-point Lady Cat lead and gave Shepherd (WV) University a stunning 80-79 victory over Pitt-Johnstown, Saturday afternoon in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD) scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace the Lady Cats, who fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the WVIAC.
Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) knocked down a pair of free-throws with :10 remaining to put Pitt-Johnstown 79-78, but Fayak took Katie Briggs' pass and found the bottom of the net at the buzzer to sink the Lady Cats.
Shepherd opened-up a 19-13 lead on a Briggs three-pointer six minutes into the game, before a three-pointer by Loughner and a Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) lay-up capped a quick 5-0 Lady Cat run :36 later cut cut it to 19-18.
Kelly Goode's (Cincinnati, OH) basket at 7:53 put Pitt-Johnstown up 29-28. After a pair of ties and five lead changes, Pitt-Johnstown built a 41-35 advantage on another Loughner bucket with 3:34 left, before the Lady Cats held a slim 31-31 halftime lead.
The Lady Rams regained the lead, 44-43, on Emily Daniel's three-pointer to open the second half, and extended it to 64-58 at the midway point.
Pitt-Johnstown battled back again. Loughner's three-pointer with 6:12 to play gave Pitt-Johnstown a 71-70 lead, and the game remained close the rest of the way. However, the Lady Cats were not able to pull out the victory and suffered its sixth loss in their last seven games.
Loughner led Pitt-Johnstown with 21 points, including four three-pointers and 5-6 from the free-throw line. Aden had 14 points and four assists, while Goode and Dalton added 10 points apiece. Loughner and Goode also pulled down six rebounds each, and Dalton had five rebounds. Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) had nine points, and Inaya Stephenson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in eight points off of the bench.
The Lady Cats shot 48.0% (24-50) from the field with eight three-pointers. Pitt-Johnstown was also 23-28 from the free-throw line. Shepherd ended the day shooting 47.1% (32-68) from the floor, 6-21 from three-point range and 10-14 from the charity stripe.
Aden currently stands in 14th-place on the Lady Cats All-Time Scoring List with 1,267 points and 25th on the all-time rebounding list with 478 rebounds, while Dalton is 32nd on the scoring list with 1,028 points and 29th on the all-time rebounding list with 424.
Jerica Hewitt scored a game-high 23 points to lead Shepherd. Fayak finished with 14 points, and Daniels had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Rams, who improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will break for the holiday season, before hosting a non-conference game against Lock Haven University on Thursday, December 30 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
