Lady Cats Defeat Hosts, 63-57, in Final Round of IUP Breast Cancer Foundation Classic

Senior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds, and red-shirt freshman guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa.) added 18 points on their way to being named First Team All-Tournament and leading the Lady Cats to a 63-57 win over the host school in Sunday's final round of the IUP Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Classic. Pitt Johnstown improved to 3-2 on the year.
After building a 30-20 halftime lead, Head Coach Jodi Gault's team extended the lead to 15 points on Andrews' basket with 17:11 to play. However, the Indians battled back to cut the Pitt Johnstown lead to 57-55 with 1:32 to play. A basket and three free-throws from senior guard Jaclyn Schirf (Loretto, Pa.) pushed the lead up to 61-55. The Indians added a basket with :05 to play, before Andrews hit a pair of free-throws with :02 to set the final score at 63-57.
Along with her 18 points, Andrews pulled down six rebounds and had three assists, while Conner finished the night 7-11 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.), a Second Team All-Tournament Team selection, tallied 14 points and tied Conner's game-high of 13 rebounds. Zapf was also 6-6 from the free-throw line. Schirf ended with nine points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists in the victory.
With her 13 rebounds, Zapf moved into 26th place on the All-Time Rebounding List with 423 career rebounds. With 21 more rebounds, Zapf will tie Lisa Britt (1976-80) for 25th place.
Once again, the Lady Cats played outstanding defense by holding the Indians to just 30.0% (21-70) shooting from the field and 16.0% (4-25) shooting from three-point range. Pitt Johnstown also dominated IUP on the glass, outrebounding the Indians 51-34, including holding a 37-19 edge on the defensive end. The Lady Cats shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field and 77.3% (17-22) from the free-throw line.
Kara Taylor scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead IUP. Lizzie Suwala and Jahzinga Tracey each added 11 points. Jahzinga also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for the Indians, who fell to 2-3 on the season.
Pitt Johnstown travels to Shippensburg University on Wednesday, before hosting Salem International (WV) University in the first home game of the 2005-06 season on Sunday, December 4 at 3:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
