Strong Second Half Leads Lady Cats Over Lock Haven

Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) had game-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 22 points to help the Lady Cat basketball team break open a one-point halftime lead and cruise to an 85-72 non-conference victory over Lock Haven University, Thursday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown raised its record to 4-6.
In a tight first half that saw neither team lead by more than four points, Lock Haven went up 9-5 on Emily Dougherty's three-pointer four minutes in the game.
Maria Montini's (Irwin, Pa.) answered with one of Pitt-Johnstown five first half three-pointers at 9:18 to give the Lady Cats their first lead of the night at 22-21.
Following a tie and seven more lead changes, Pitt-Johnstown extended its slim lead to 36-32 on Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) three-pointer from the corner at the four-minute mark.
With less than a minute remaining in the half, Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD) made it 40-36 in favor of the Lady Cats, but Dougherty's three-pointer from half court at the buzzer cut the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 40-39 at the break.
The Lady Eagles regained the lead 43-42 on a Kacie Hershey lay-up 2:18 into the second half. Pitt-Johnstown used a 9-0 run after a technical foul on the Lock Haven bench to build a 51-53 advantage on Andrea Dalton's (Washington, Pa.) three-pointer 2:42 later.
Lock Haven battled back to cut it to 53-51 on another Hershey basket at 12:38, but a pair of free-throws from Loughner and a three-pointer from Dalton quickly pushed the lead back out the seven at 58-51.
Two more Loughner free-throws increased the Lady Cat lead to 62-53 at 10:47, before Lock Haven outscored Pitt-Johnstown 8-1 to cut it to 63-61 two minutes later.
That was as close as it would get. Pitt-Johnstown extended it to 10 on back-to-back three-pointers from Dalton, and to 13 on a three-pointer from Kelly Goode (Cincinnati, OH) with 3:13 on the clock, The Lady Cats hit 9-12 from the free-throw in the final 1:12 to seal the 13-point win.
Dalton led all scorers with 23 points, including six three-pointers,and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Aden added 22 points on 5-8 shooting and 11-13 from the free-throw line. Aden also had six rebounds. Loughner collected 20 points (9-10 free-throws), and Goode and Montini each had seven points. Goode also had seven rebounds and six assists int he victory.
Aden currently stands in 14th-place on the Lady Cats All-Time Scoring List with 1,289 points and 24th on the all-time rebounding list with 484 rebounds, while Dalton is tied with Crystal Barr (2000-04) for 26th on the scoring list with 1,051 points and 29th on the all-time rebounding list with 435.
The Lady Cats ended the night shooting 43.6% (24-44) from the field, 11-25 from three-point range and 26-33 from the free-throw line. Lock Haven shot 43.7% (31-71) from the floor, 3-9 from behind the three-point line and 7-9 from the charity stripe.
Kristen Kudrick and Hershey both scored 18 points to pace Lock Haven, which dropped to 5-2 on the year.
The Lady Cats open the second semester with road WVIAC games at West Virginia State University on January 8 and at Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on January 10, before hosting WVIAC rival Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday, January 13 at 6 p.m. in the Sports Center as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats.
