Lady Cats' Season Ends With Loss at Wheeling Jesuit

The Lady Cats battled back form a 10-point deficit to build a seven-point second half lead, but No. 8-seeded Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University rallied late to end No. 9 Pitt-Johnstown's season with a 70-63 loss, Monday night in the First Round of the 2010 WVIAC Tournament in Wheeling, WV. Kelly Goode (Pleasant Plain, OH) led all scorers with 19 points, and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Cats, who finished with at 15-13.
Dalton scored seven early points to help the Lady Cats climb out to an 11-5 lead seven minutes into the game. Dalton hit a three-pointer and Goode followed with a lay-up to make 5-0, before back-to-back baskets by Dalton put the Lady Cats up by six at the 13-minute mark.
Chrissy Pavlik hit a pair of three-pointers to spark an 8-0 Lady Cardinals's run over the next two minutes to give Wheeling Jesuit its first lead of the night at 13-11 at 11:20.
Pitt-Johnstown recovered take a 20-16 advantage on two more of Goode's nine first half points, but Wheeling Jesuit outscored the Lady Cats 20-11 the rest of the half.
Megan Stuvek's jumper with 57 seconds remaining gave the Lady Cardinals a double-digit lead at at 36-26, before Pitt-Johnstown scored the final five points of the first half to cut it to 36-31 on Qiuana Brown's (Monroeville, Pa.) three-pointer as time expired.
Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD) opened the second half with a short jumper to get Pitt-Johnstown within three. Wheeling Jesuit answered with six straight to extend the lead back to nine at 42-33 on Kara DeSantis' three-pointer with 18:04 to play.
The Lady Cats battled back with a 12-0 over the next 4:29, capped by Dalton's bucket in the paint, to retake the lead, 45-42 at 13:35.
The Cardinals tied it the next trip down the floor, but Pitt-Johnstown was able to push the lead to 58-51 on Goode's three-pointer with seven minutes left.
Wheeling Jesuit countered by scoring nine of the next 10 to regain the lead 60-59 at 4:14.
After the teams exchanged the lead four more times, the Lady Cardinals took the lead for good at 64-63 on two Kourtney Booth free-throws at 2:33, before going on to the seven-point victory.
The Lady Cats ended the night shooting just 34.3% from the floor and 7-29 from three-point range. Wheeling Jesuit shot 39% and 8-20 from behind the three-point line. Pitt-Johnstown was 10-14 from the charity stripe, while the Lady Cardinals hit 16-26 from the free-throw line.
Goode led all scorers with 19 points on 6-14 shooting, 3-8 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Goode also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Dalton had 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, and Brown rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) had six points and six rebounds, and Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.) chipped in eight points off the bench.
With her six points against Wheeling Jesuit, Aden will enter her senior season in 24th-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,104 points. She is 31 points away from Carol Mumma (1978-82) for 23rd-place. Aden also ranks 28th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 419, 25 shy of Lisa Britt (1976-80) for 27th-place.
Stuvek led Wheeling Jesuit with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Booth netted 17 points and Pavlik had 16 points to lead the Lady Cardinals, who advance to take on top-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan College in Wednesday's WVIAC Quarterfinals in Charleston, WV. Wheeling Jesuit evened its record at 14-14.
