Lady Cats Earn 79-67 Win at Ohio Valley

The Lady Cats opened the game on a 23-2 run and climbed out to a 31-point first half lead in a 79-67 WVIAC win at Ohio Valley (WV) University on Saturday. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) scored a game-high 23 points and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) added 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown, now 6-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
The Lady Cats dominated from the opening whistle. Pitt-Johnstown built a 31-point halftime lead and held Ohio Valley to just 17.6% shooting (6-34) in the first half.
Aden and Kelly Goode (Cincinnati, OH) combined to score the first 11 points, before Kayla Loughner's (Brinklow, MD) free-throws eight minutes in capped a 23-2 Pitt-Johnstown run to start the game.
Shelby Way connected on a pair of free-throws to cut the Lady Scots' deficit to 25-8 just over a minute later, but the Lady Cats outscored Ohio Valley 21-9 over the final 11 minutes to extend the lead to 29 at the break.
Three more of Aden's 17 first half points pushed the lead to 43-13, and Goode hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining to give Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the first half at 46-15.
Ohio Valley got a basket from Denae Beavers' with six seconds left to make it 46-17 at the half.
The Lady Scots scored the first six points of the second half , but Dalton's three-pointer at 14:43 pushed the Lady Cat lead back out to 26 at 54-28.
Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) basket extended the lead to 60-33 at 11:22.
Ohio Valley answered with a 12-3 run over the next 3:23 to pull to within 18 on Way's jumper.
The Lady Cats rebuilt the lead to as many as 24 on two Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) free-throws with 4:45 to play, before going on to the 12-point victory.
Aden led all scorers with 23 points on 9-13 shooting from the field, 2-3 from behind the three-point line and 3-5 from the free-throw line. Aden also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Dalton ended with 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Goode collected a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Trimarco added nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Aden currently stands in 13th-place on the Lady Cats All-Time Scoring List with 1,332 points and 22nd on the all-time rebounding list with 499 rebounds, while Dalton is 25th on the scoring list with 1,124 points and 26th on the all-time rebounding list with 476.
Pitt-Johnstown, which held a 43-32 advantage in rebounding, shot 48.1% (26-54) from the floor, 10-24 from three-point range and 17-20 from the free-throw line. Ohio Valley finished the day shooting 35.8% (24-67) from the field, 5-22 from behind the three-point line and 14-20 from the charity stripe.
Beavers paced the Lady Scots with 20 points and six rebounds. Way had 17 points and Brittany Taylor chipped in 12 points for Ohio Valley, which fell to 8-5 overall and 5-5 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats host WVIAC doubleheaders with the Mountain Cats against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Monday at 5:30, Seton Hill University on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Ohio Valley (WV) University on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.
