Lady Cats Fall to Hosts at Kutztown Golden Bear Classic; Lindsay Cale Named to All-Classic Team

11/16/2008

Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked three shots on her way to being named to the All-Classic Team, but it wasn't enough, as the Lady Cat basketball team was not able to hold onto a seven-point halftime lead and suffered an 86-72 loss to the hosts in Sunday's final round of the Kutztown University Golden Bear Classic. Pitt-Johnstown is now 0-2.
The Lady Cats held a 31-24 halftime lead, but Pitt-Johnstown could not stop Classic Most Valuable Player Melissa McQuade, who scored 30 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, in the 14-point loss. Kutztown outscored Pitt-Johnstown 62-41 in the second half.
Along with Cale's efforts, Head coach Sasha Palmer got a team-high 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line from freshman Taylor Griffith (Hollidaysburg, Pa.). Cale finished 6-14 shooting with one three-pointer and 3-3 from the free-throw line. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) rounded out the Pitt-Johnstown double-figure scorers with 10 points and four rebounds.
Pitt-Johnstown rebounded from a poor shooting performance in Saturday's opener by connecting on 45.2% (28-62) from the field, 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range and 73.3% (11-15) from the free-throw line. The Lady Cats, who were out-rebounded 46-27, held the Golden Bears to 43.8% (28-64) shooting. However, Kutztown hit 10 of its 21 three-pointers and 20 of its 23 free-throws to secure the win.
McQuade scored 30 points on 8-14 shooting, including 4-5 from behind the three-point line and 10-10 from the charity stripe to lead three Golden Bears who scored in double figures. Rachel Wisemiller scored 21 points and had eight rebounds, and Chauntelle Schroeder chipped in 19 points and 10 rebounds to help Kutztown inprove to 2-0.
Joining Cale and McQuade on the All-Classic Team were Julie Molloy (Slippery Rock), Vanessa Holden (LeMoyne), Courtney Coryea (LeMoyne) and Rachel Wisemiller (Kutztown).
The Lady Cats tip-off the WVIAC conference schedule at Seton Hill University on Wednesday, before making their 2008-09 home debut against Shippensburg University on Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
