Lady Cats Defeat Ashland, 69-50, to Claim Title at Mountain Cat Tournament

Red-shirt freshman guard and Tournament Most Valuable Player Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Pitt Johnstown to a 69-50 victory over Ashland (OH) University in Friday's championship game of the 2005 women's basketball Mountain Cat Tournament sponsored by Cummings Trophies & Engraving. Junior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 11 points, and game-highs of 10 rebounds and six steals on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. With the victory, Pitt Johnstown has won eight straight games and improved to 9-2 on the season.
After scoring 19 points in the opening round, Andrews continued her great play by connecting on 5 of her 11 shots, including 2-2 from behind the three-point line and 4-6 from the free-throw line. Andrews also had four assists, two blocks and two steals, while Zapf finished 3-6 from the field and 5-6 from the free-throw line. Junior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in 16 points and four steals, and red-shirt junior forward Shannon Reigh (Williamsburg, Pa.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points on 5-5 shooting off of Coach Jodi Gault's bench.
Once again, Pitt Johnstown jumped out to a 15-2 lead and cruised to a 19-point win. The Lady Cats dominated defensively, holding Ashland to just 33.3% (18-54) shooting from the field and 2-16 from behind the three-point line. Pitt Johnstown also forced 25 turnovers and turned them into 25 points. The Lady Cats ended the game shooting 27-58 (46.6%) and 4-7 (57.1%) from three-point range.
Ashland's Amber Rall scored nine points and Lisa Graue added eight points and seven rebounds in the loss. Ashland is now 6-7.
In Friday's consolation game, Philadelphia defeated Bloomsburg, 76-65, behind 19 points and six rebounds from Nicole Mechell. Meg Abele, Ashley Webster and Megan Zoltek all scored 17 points, while Webster pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for Philadelphia, now 5-3 on the season. Gabe Miskinis' 26 points and 12 rebounds led Bloomsburg, which fell to 3-7 on the year.

The Lady Cats will tip-off the second semester at Millersville University on Wednesday, before returning home to host Columbia Union (MD) College as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cat men's basketball team on Saturday, January 7. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:00 p.m.
