Lady Cats Dealt 70-64 Loss at Salem International

02/21/2008

Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) scored 19 points off of Head Coach Sasha Palmer's bench, but the Lady Cat basketball team could not overcome a 28-point performance from Tapre Young in a 70-64 loss at Salem International (WV) University, Thursday evening. The Lady Cats, whose chance to host a first round WVIAC Tournament game took a hit, dropped to 10-16 overall and 9-10 in conference play.
With Pitt Johnstown's loss to the Tigers and Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University's 71-66 win at Seton Hill, the Lady Cats will need to win at regular season WVIAC champion Shepherd (WV) University to guarantee a home game in Monday's first round of the conference tournament. A loss by both teams would come down to WVIAC Power Points, and that will not be decided until after Saturday's games are played.
The Lady Cats and Tigers battled to a 27-27 halftime tie, but Salem International went on to outscore Pitt Johnstown 43-37 in the second half on 64.0% shooting in a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes.
Irwin finished the game shooting 6-16 from the field and 5-6 from the free-throw line, while Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) was the only other Lady Cat to score in double figures. Cale scored 13 points on 3-6 shooting and 7-7 from the free-throw line and grabbed six rebounds. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added eight points and Jill Maurer (Johnstown, Pa.) and Krista Britcher (Johnstown, Pa.) collected seven points apiece. Coach Palmer also got a game-high seven rebounds from Chrissy Forster (Lewisberry, Pa.) in the loss.
Pitt Johnstown shot 38.6% (22-57) from the field and just 15.0% (3-20) from three-point range, while the Tigers ended the night shooting 55.1% (27-49) with six three-pointers. The Lady Cats were also 17-19 from the free-throw line. Salem International was 10-13 from the charity stripe. Pitt Johnstown, who was out rebounded 30-27, also forced 17 turnovers and turned them into 25 points, but it wasn't enough.
Young's 28 points on 10-17 shooting from the field, 2-6 from three-point range and 6-8 from the free-throw line led three Tigers who scored in double figures. Jeannie Saunders tallied 18 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Lakeisha Bowsman chipped in 12 points to help the Tigers improve to 9-17 overall and 8-11 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats wrap-up the regular season at Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday. The Lady Cats will also play in the First Round of the 2008 WVIAC Tournament on Monday at a site to be determined.
