Lady Cats Fall at Home to #4 California (PA), 94-67

The #4-ranked California University (PA) Vulcans used a 17-4 run to start the game and an 18-6 run to begin the second half to earn a 94-67 victory over the Lady Cat basketball team, Tuesday night in the Sports Center. Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) 19 points and nine rebounds led Pitt-Johnstown, now 1-5 on the year.
California (PA) stormed out to a 17-4 advantage 3:57 into the game, before the Lady Cats answered with a 15-5 run over the next 4:10 to cut the deficit to 22-19 on Aden's layup. Pitt-Johnstown kept it close until the Vulcans closed out the final 3:43 of the first half on a 10-7 run to take a 44-36 halftime lead. That proved to be as close as the Lady Cats would get.
California (PA) started the second half like the first half ended, with an impressive run. The Vulcans, who shot 59.4% in the second half, outscored Pitt-Johnstown 18-6 in the first six minutes to increase the lead to 58-41. California (PA) built the lead to 74-44 with 10:13 remaining, before going on to the 27-point victory.
Aden ended the evening shooting just 4-13 from the field, but 11-12 from the free-throw line for her team-high 19 points. Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) chipped in 13 points and six assists, while Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds. Taylor Griffith (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Head coach Sasha Palmer also got eight points, seven rebounds and three assists from Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.).
Pitt-Johnstown shot just 35.5% (22-62) from the field and 25.0% (4-16) from behind the three-point line. The Lady Cats also connected on 19 of their 23 free-throws. After shooting just 40.0% in the first half, the Vulcans turned it on to shoot 59.4% in the second half to finish the night at 48.1% (37-77) California (PA), which out rebounded the Lady Cats 51-34, hit eight three-pointers and 12-16 from the charity stripe.
Brooque Williams poured in a game-high 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the way for California (PA). Kayla Smith, scored 16 of her 24 points and pulled down 10 of her game-high 17 rebounds in the first half. The Vulcans also got 12 points and five rebounds from Shaquetta Mance and 10 points and six rebounds from Amber Dubyak. Greater Johnstown High School graduate Crystal Andrews scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out six assists to help California (PA) improve to 5-1.
The Lady Cats travel to Ohio Valley (WV) University for a WVIAC game on Thursday, before breaking for Finals Week. Pitt-Johnstown will then host Slippery Rock University on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
