Lady Cats Stay Hot With 72-59 Win at Bluefield State

The Lady Cats ran out to a 19-0 lead 11:25 into the game on their way to making it seven wins in their last eight games with a 72-59 victory at Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) and Kelly Goode (Cincinnati, OH) each scored 12 points to lead a Lady Cat attack that saw 12 players join the scoring column. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 11-8 overall and 9-6 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats took full control from the opening tip with 19-0 run. Katie McBroom's (Derry, Pa.) lay-up at 13:15 made it 10-0, before Inaya Stephenson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pushed it out to 19-0 4:30 later with a bucket in the paint.
Bluefield State answered with an 18-6 run, capped by Kateishia Wright's basket at the three-minute mark, to get back into the game and cut the deficit to 25-18.
However, Pitt-Johnstown scored eight of the final nine points of the first half, including a pair of free-throws by Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD) with four seconds remaining, to give Pitt-Johnstown a 33-19 halftime advantage.
Goode opened the second half with a three-pointer to push the lead to 36-19, and the Lady Cats never let the Lady Blues get any closer than 11.
Bluefield State's Amber Fitzgerald's basket at 17:47 made it 36-25, but Pitt-Johnstown slowly rebuilt the lead to 20 at 55-35 on a Rachel Johnson (Palmyra, Pa.) lay-up midway through the half.
The Lady Cats eventually extended it to 21 on Elisa Schober's (Washington, Pa.) basket with 5:50 to play, before going on to the 13-point victory.
Goode finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Aden added 12 points and five rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Johnson had eight points and a game-high eight rebounds, and McBroom chipped in eight points. The Lady Cats also got five points apiece from Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) and Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.).
Aden stands in ninth-place on the Lady Cats All-Time Scoring List with 1,431 points, and 20th on the all-time rebounding list with 526 rebounds, while Dalton is 17th on the scoring list with 1,220 points and 22nd on the all-time rebounding list with 519.
Pitt-Johnstown ended the night shooting 45.2% (28-62) from the field, 5-17 from three-point range and 11-16 from the free-throw line. Bluefield State shot 41.7% (25-60) from the floor, but just 1-14 from behind the three-point line. The Lady Blues were also 8-13 from the charity stripe.
Kelli Morgan poured in a game-high 21 points and Wright collected 13 points to pace the Lady Blues, who fell to 2-19 overall and 1-16 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats host a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to West Liberty (WV) University for another conference game on Thursday.
