Lady Cats Rally for 74-71 Win Over Slippery Rock

The Lady Cat basketball team battled back from nine-point second deficit and secured a 74-71 victory over Slippery Rock University, Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) gave Pitt-Johnstown a one-point lead with a lay-up with :27 to play, and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) hit a pair of free-throws to seal the win. The Lady Cats wrapped up the first semester with a 3-5 overall record.
After exchanging the lead several times in the first half, Slippery Rock outscored Pitt-Johnstown 8-3 over the final 4:43 of the half to take a 40-34-halftime lead. The Rock increased the lead to nine points on two occasions in the second half. Alissa Schake's layup :25 into the half gave Slippery rock a 43-36 lead. The Rock matched its nine-point lead 4:25 later on Julie Molloy's lay-up. However, the Lady Cats battled back to take a 68-67 lead when Taylor Griffith's (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) jumper fell from the corner. The teams exchanged the lead three more times before Pitt-Johnstown went on top for good on Aden's layup with :27 on the clock.
Griffith led all scorers with 17 points on 7-18 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line, while Kaitlin Urban (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in 16 points on 5-9 shooting from the field, 4-8 from three-point range and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Aden rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 12 points. Dalton and Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) tallied nine and eight points, respectively. Head coach Sasha Palmer also got five points, a team-high six rebounds and three assists from Jamie Gennet (Davidsville, Pa.) and five points and five rebounds from Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.).
After shooting just 35.1% in the first half, Pitt-Johnstown came out in the second half and shot 41.2% to end the night at 38.0%. The Lady Cats, also connected on 10 three-pointers and 10-12 from the the free-throw line. The Rock, which out rebounded Pitt-Johnstown 48-34, shot 46.7% from the field (28-60), 40.0% (2-5) from behind the three-point line and 68.4% (13-19) from the charity stripe. Slippery Rock also committed 23 turnovers, compared to just 13 for the Lady Cats.
Amanda Nero scored a team-high 16 points to pace three Slippery Rock players who scored in double figures. Schake added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Molloy had 10 points. Sasha Sales scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 21 rebounds, including 14 in the first half, for The Rock, who fell to 3-5.
The Lady Cats will break for the holidays, before traveling to Lock Haven University on Dec. 30 and to WVIAC rival Shepherd (WV) University on Jan. 3. Pitt-Johnstown will return to the Sports Center to host Fairmont State (WV) University on Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. as part of a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats.
