Lady Cats Defeat Shepherd 70-60 For Fourth Straight Win

Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out six assists to lead the Lady Cat basketball team to a 70-60 victory at Shepherd (WV) University, Saturday evening. Pitt-Johnstown made it four straight wins to improve to 5-5 on the season and stay unbeaten in WVIAC play at 3-0.
The Lady Cats opened up a 20-15 lead on Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) layup with 9:33 to play in the first half. Shepherd cut the lead to 26-25 at the 3:33 mark, but Pitt-Johnstown closed out the half on a 13-4 run to take a 38-30 halftime lead.
The Lady Cats came out in the second half and built the lead to 46-34 when Kristin Irwin's (Bellefonte, Pa.) three-pointer found the bottom on the net with 15:14 left on the clock. The Lady Rams battled back to cut the deficit to 55-52 with 4:23 to play, but Pitt-Johnstown sealed the 10-point win by hitting 7-9 from the free-throw line down the stretch, including a perfect 6-6 from Cale in the last :30.
Cale's 14 points led four Lady Cats who scored in double figures. Aden scored 13 points and made a game-high four steals, while Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.) and Taylor Griffith (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) tallied 10 points apiece. Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) collected nine points, and Irwin chipped in seven points, a game-high nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The Lady Casts overcame 22 turnovers and 39.0% (23-59) shooting for the game by finishing an impressive 20-24 (83.3%) from the free-throw line. Shepherd committed 28 turnovers and shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field. The Lady Rams, who out rebounded Pitt-Johnstown 39-35, were just 14-21 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.
Colleen Shumaker scored 16 points and tied Irwin for game-high in rebounds with nine to lead Shepherd. Katie Warehime (14 points), Camille Wilmer (11 points) and Krissy Grosselin (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Lady Rams, who fell to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will host host Fairmont State (WV) University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center as part of a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats. The Mountain Cats will tip-off against the Falcons at 7:30 p.m.
