Lady Cats Defeat Concord For Ninth Straight Victory

Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Cat basketball team to its ninth straight win in a 70-55 victory at Concord (WV) University, Thursday evening. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 10-5 overall and remained in first place in the WVIAC with an 8-0 record.
Concord held leads of 4-2 and 6-5 two minutes into the game, but the Lady Cats never gave up the lead after that. Sheena Aden's (Sandy Lake, Pa.) free-throws at 13:17 gave the Lady Cats 17-10 lead, before Concord cut it to 17-14 1:04 later. Pitt-Johnstown went up 30-21 on Kristin Irwin's (Bellefonte, Pa.) jumper with 6:17 remaining. A minute later, Kaitlin Urban's (Johnstown, Pa.) three-pointer gave the Lady Cats their largest lead of the first half at 36-24, before Pitt-Johnstown took a 39-30 halftime lead.
Pitt-Johnstown quickly took the advantage back to double-digits with an 8-0 run to start the second half, capped by Andrea Dalton's (Washington, Pa.) layup with 16:29 to play. Concord never got closer than 11 points. Cale's layup at 14:50 increased the lead to 19 points. The Mountain Lions battled back to pull within 66-55 with 2:11 remaining, but the Lady Cats held Concord scoreless the rest of the way and earned the 15-point victory.
Cale ended the night with 24 points on 8-12 shooting, including 2-3 from three-point range and 6-6 from the free-throw line. Cale also had three rebounds and a game-high five steals, while Irwin collected 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Aden rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 11 points on 3-6 shooting and 5-6 from the free-throw line. Head coach Sasha Palmer also got six points and five rebounds from Dalton, and six point apiece from Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) and Urban. Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.) and Aden each had four assists to pace Pitt-Johnstown.
The Lady Cats ended the night shooting 48.1% (25-52) from the field, while holding Concord to just 36.0% (18-50). Pitt-Johnstown was 6-10 from behind the three-point line and 14-20 from the charity stripe. The Mountain Lions were just 2-6 from three-point range and 17-29 from the free-throw line.
Sierra Brown's 18 points led three Concord players who scored in double figures. Cassidy Smith (12 points) and Amber Showalter (11 points) also scored in double figures, while Jolysa Brown pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Mountain Lions, who fell to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
The Lady Cats travel to Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday, before hosting a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against the University of Charleston (WV) on Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
