Jessica Zapf's Career-Day Leads Lady Cats To Win Over Point Park

Senior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tied career-highs of 27 points and 17 rebounds in leading Head Coach Jodi Gault's Lady Cat basketball team to a 79-63 win over Point Park University, Sunday afternoon in the Sports Center. With the victory, Pitt-Johnstown enters finals week and the holiday season with two straight wins and a 5-3 overall record.
Zapf who scored 14 of her 27 points in the first six minutes of the game, finished 10-17 from the field and 7-9 from the free-throw line. Of her 17 rebounds, 11 came on the offensive end. Senior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) added 20 points, including three three-pointers, five assists and four steals. Coach Gault also got 11 points and 3 more three-pointers from sophomore guard Lindsey McCombie ( Nicktown, Pa.) in 12 minutes off the bench, while sophomore forward Lindsay Cale ( Hummelstown, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points. Pitt-Johnstown, which outrebounded Point Park 54-33, also got a career-high 12 rebounds from red-shirt junior Sarah Priest (Johnstown, Pa.) and six rebounds from red-shirt sophomore Krista Brischer (Johnstown, Pa.).
With her 17 rebounds, Zapf tied Suzy Shimkus (1980-84) for 11th place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding list with 681 rebounds. She is now 41 rebounds shy of tying Helen Young (1999-03) for 10th place on the list.
Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to a quick 21-5 lead 6:30 into the game, before taking a 40-30 halftime lead. The Lady Cats increased that lead to 23 points with 12 minutes to play in the game. Point Park continued to battle, but never cut the lead under double figures.
The Lady Cats shot better from the field, finishing the day 28-64 (43.8%), 8-21 (38.1%) from three-point range and 15-18 (83.3%) from the free-throw line. Pitt-Johnstown held the Pioneers to just 32.4% (23-71) from the field and 21.7% (5-23) from behind the three-point line.
Charlisa Cummins' 25 points and nine rebounds led Point Park. Lindsay Dibble added 14 points and five rebounds and Brittney Wilson scored 11 points to round out the double figure scorers for the Pioneers, now 4-5 on the year.
The Lady Cats will break for finals and the holiday season before hosting the 2006 Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cat Tournament on December 29-30 in the Sports Center. On December 29, Tiffin(OH) University will play Bloomfield (NJ) College at 6:00 p.m., followed by Pitt-Johnstown taking on Daemen (NY) College at 8:00 p.m. The Consolation and Championship games will be played on December 30 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
