Charleston Ends Lady Cat Win Streak at 10 Games

The University of Charleston (WV) built a 42-28 halftime advantage and went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 73-58 and end the Lady Cats 10-game winning streak, Monday night in the Sports Center. Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown, which dropped out of first place in the WVIAC and slipped to 11-6 overall and 9-1 in league play.
Jamie Gennett's (Davidsville, Pa.) three-pointer gave the Lady Cats a 19-12 lead 7:39 into the first half, but Charleston used a 9-2 run to tie the game at 21 with 8:54 remaining in the first half. The Golden Eagles, who held a 28-9 first half advantage in rebounding, continued to hold the momentum the rest of the half. Charleston outscored Pitt-Johnstown 21-7 the rest of the way and took the 14-point halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles quickly increased the lead to 49-30 on on Ali Tobias' three-pointer with 17:26 to play. Baker's layup pulled the Lady Cats to within 14 with 9:04 to play. Then, 4:41 later, Pitt-Johnstown cut the deficit to 63-52 on another Baker layup, but that was as close at Pitt-Johnstown would get. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 21 points with 2:00 remaining, before going on to the 15-point victory.
Baker's 18 points on 8-12 shooting, including 2-2 from three-point range, and six rebounds paced the Lady Cats. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 11 points, while Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) finished with nine points and a game-high nine assists. Head coach Sasha Palmer also got eight points from Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) and six points, five rebounds and four assists from Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.).
Pitt-Johnstown, which narrowed the rebounding deficit to 43-34, shot just 40.3% (25-62) from the field and just 27.8 (5-18) from behind the three-point line. Charleston ended the night shooting 44.6% (29-65) from the field. Although the Golden Eagles were just 2-14 from behind the arc, they connected on 13-19 from the free-throw line. Pitt-Johnstown was 3-5 from the charity stripe.
Jihan Williams' league leading 11th double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds paced Charleston. Veronica Williams chipped in 13 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 15-4 overall and 11-1 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to Salem International (WV) University on Thursday, before returning home to host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Seton Hill University on Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
