Allison Krischer Named MVP as Lady Cats Repeat as Mountain Cat Tournament Champions

Senior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) earned Most Valuable Player honors on Saturday after scoring 20 points in a 62-50 win over Bloomfield (NJ) College to lead the Lady Cats to their second consecutive Cummings Trophies & Engraving Mountain Cat Torunament Championship. With the win, Head Coach Jodi Gault's team improved to 7-3.
Along with her 20 points, Krischer also had six rebounds, a game-high six assists and three steals, while senior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 18 points 11 rebounds and three blocks to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Senior forward Jami Oaks (South Fork, Pa.) chipped in 11 points off the bench, and red-shirt junior forward Sarah Priest (Johnstown, Pa.) scored four points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots in the victory.
With her 18 points, Zapf is now 37 points away from becoming the 29th Lady Cat to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Zapf also has 702 career rebounds. She is 20 rebounds shy of Helen Young (1999-03) for 10th on the All-Time Rebounding List.
Coach Gault's Lady Cats climbed out to a 12-4 lead seven minutes into the game and took a 29-21 halftime lead. Pitt Johnstown built that eight-point halftime lead to 18 points with 4:31 to play, before going on to the 12-point win.
The Lady Cats' solid defense proved to be a major factor in the victory. Pitt Johnstown held the Deacons to just 17-64 (26.6%) shooting from the field and 1-8 (12.5%) from three-point range. The Lady Cats shot well enough to win. Pitt Johnstown finished at 43.1% (25-58) from the floor, 55.6% (5-9) from behind the three-point line and 87.5% (7-8) from the free-throw line.
Shantae Barnes' 12 points and game-high 22 rebounds led the way for Bloomfield. Renee Vales added 11 points and five steals for the Deacons, who dropped to 5-4 on the season.
In Saturday's consolation game, Daemen held on for a 75-70 win over Tiffin. Jackson led all scorers with 32 points, while Sarah Bogardus scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Tiffin was led by Leanne Lucius' 17 points.
Joining Krischer and Zapf on the All-Tournament team were Barnes (Bloomfield), Germany Jackson (Daemen) and Sarah Pitson (Tiffin).
Pitt Johnstown travels to Indiana University (PA) on Wednesday and to Columbia Union (MD) College on January 11, before returning home to host Concord (WV) University as part of a doubleheader with the Mountain Cat basketball team on Saturday, January 13. The lady Cats will tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
