Lady Cats Advance to WVIAC Quarters With Win Over Ohio Valley

Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) scored all 17 of her points in the first half, and Katie McBroom (Derry, Pa.) hit a key three-pointer late in the game to help the #6-seeded Lady Cats earn a spot in the 2011 WVIAC Tournament Quarterfinals with a 58-55 victory over #11-seeded Ohio Valley (WV) University, Monday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown, 16-11 on the year, will take on #3 Glenville State (WV) College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.Va.
Aden scored 17 first-half points to help the Lady Cats build an 18-point advantage.
Pitt-Johnstown ran out to a 19-10 lead on two Aden free-throws at 11:31, before another Aden bucket at 7:19 pushed the lead to 26-12.
Inaya Stephenson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) then connected on one of two free-throws two minutes later to give the Lady Cats their largest lead of the first half at 32-14.
Ohio Valley tried to claw its way back into the game with a 10-4 run to close out the half. Rayshell Pittmans's three-pointer with a minute remaining got Lady Scots to within 10, but Aden took Sara Trimarco's (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) feed and scored as time ran out to put Pitt-Johnstown up 36-24 at the break.
The Lady Scots maintained the momentum to begin the second half and outscored the Lady Cats 12-3 over the first four minutes to pull to within three at 39-36 on two Brittany Taylor free-throws.
Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) snapped the run with five straight points to ignite a 9-0 Pitt-Johnstown run. Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.) hit two free-throws, and Grace Hyland (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored in the paint to get the lead back to 12 with 8:03 to play.
Ohio Valley battled back again. The Lady Scots narrowed the gap to 51-50 on Shelby Way's free-throws at 3:03, but Pitt-Johnstown wouldn't allow Ohio Valley to get over the hump.
Dalton scored again and McBroom drained her first three-pointer of the year to extend the lead to 56-50 with 1:15 on the clock, before the Lady Cats held on for the three-point victory.
Aden led the Lady Cats with 17 points and six rebounds, while Dalton finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Stephenson chipped in six points and six rebounds, and Kayla Loughner (Brinklow, MD) added five points and six rebounds.
Aden stands in fourth-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,582 points, and 18th on the all-time rebounding list with 570 rebounds, while Dalton is 12th on the scoring list with 1,391 points and 17th on the rebounding list with 601.
Pitt-Johnstown, which overcame 29 turnovers, shot 43.8% (21-48) from the field, 5-15 from three-point range and 11-16 from the free-throw line, while holding the Lady Scots to just 33.3% (22-66) shooting. Ohio Valley was also 3-11 from behind the three-point line and 8-13 from the charity stripe.
Taylor led Ohio Valley with a game-high 19 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals. with the loss, the Lady Scots season comes to an end with a 14-13 overall record.
