01/31/2009

Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and the Lady Cat basketball team built a 20-point halftime lead en route to an 82-64 victory over Seton Hill University, Saturday evening in the Sports Center. The win, coupled with a loss by Charleston put Pitt-Johnstown back into first place in the WVIAC standings with a 13-6 overall record and an 11-1 mark in conference play.
Pitt-Johnstown ran out to a 6-0 led three minutes into the game, but Seton Hill cut it to 8-6 on Orit Farchi's layup at 14:34. That was as close as the game would get. Baker's layup capped a 20-6 Pitt-Johnstown run and gave the Lady Cats a 28-12 advantage with 6:28 remaining. The Griffins cut the deficit to 10 two minutes later, but the momentum ended when the Seton Hill bench was hit with a technical foul 3:37 left. The Lady Cats outscored the Griffins 11-4 over the final 3:37 to take a 44-24 halftime lead.
Pitt-Johnstown maintained at least a 16-point lead for the first 9:30 of the second half. Seton Hill cut it to 48-45 with 10:57 to play, but Pitt-Johnstown answered and pushed it back up to 19 points with 4:51 on the clock on Baker's layup and free-throw. Once again the Griffins battled back. Erika Haitz' free-throw pulled Seton hill to within 72-61, but the Lady Cats connected on 7-8 from the free-throw in the last 1:29 to seal the victory.
Baker's 19 points on 8-14 shooting from the field and 3-6 from the free-throw line led four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures. Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored 16 points, including 8-8 from the free-throw line, and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) chipped in 15 points on 5-6 shooting and 5-8 from the charity stripe. Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points and five rebounds. Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) tallied six points and nine rebounds off of head coach Sasha Palmer's bench in the 18-point victory.
Pitt-Johnstown finished the night shooting 53.8% (28-52) from the field, while holding the Griffins to just 34.8% (24-69), including just 2-15 from three-point range. The Lady Cats, who hit 24-35 from the free-throw line, also dominated on the boards, out rebounding Griffins 48-29.
Jordan Burkes' 19 points and eight rebounds led the way for Seton Hill. Lindsy Muchnock (14 points) and Anne Marie Olesky (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Griffins, who slipped to 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to Glenville State (WV) College on Saturday, before returning home to host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against West Virginia State University on Monday, Feb. 9 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
