Lady Cats Fall, 89-78, at #11 Glenville State

01/15/2007

Sophomore foreward Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored a career-high 27 points, but it wasn't enough to carry the Lady Cat basketball team to an upset victory over #11-ranked Glenville State (WV) College, as Pitt Johnstown fell, 89-78, Monday night. With the loss, Head Coach Jodi Gault's Lady Cats had their seven game winning streak snapped and dropped to 10-4 on the year.
Glenville State opened the game on a 20-8 run, but the Lady Cats cut the lead to 37-35 at halftime. Pitt Johnstown took the lead in the second half and led 62-58 midway through the second half. The Lady Cats held a slim, 68-67, lead a few minutes later, but the Pioneers went on a 22-10 run to end the game and seal the victory.
The Lady Cats shot an impressive 53% (29-55) from the field, 33% (4-12) from three-point range and 73% (16-22) from the free-throw line. Glenville State also shot the ball well, finishing 33-64 (52%) from the field. Despite hitting only nine of their 20 free throws (45%), the Pioneers connected on 14 of their 29 three-pointers to finish the game at 48% from behind the three-point line. Pitt Johnstown also out rebounded Glenville State 36-32.
Along with Cale's 27 points, senior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 14 points to move to within 14 points of becoming the 30th Lady Cat to reach the 1,000-point mark. Krischer also had seven rebounds and eight assists. Senior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau in Saturday's home win over Concord (WV) University, added 13 points and red-shirt junior forward Sarah Priest (Johnstown, Pa.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Rachel Redick's game-high 29 points led four Glenville State players who scored in double figures. Melanie Oliver (16 points), Casey Taylor (14 points) and Mallory Menendez (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Pioneers, who raised their winning streak to seven games and improved to 13-2 on the season.
Pitt Johnstown returns home to begin a three-game home stand against host West Chester University on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
